Missing hunter found dead
By JOHN MARTIN Courier & Press staff writer 464-7594 or martinj@courierpress.com
Monday, December 25, 2006
Search and rescue personnel in Spencer County, Ind., found the body Saturday night of a man who suffered a heart attack while deer hunting with friends.
Robert Wilkinson, 50, had just shot a deer and was dragging it back to his stand when he collapsed and died, Spencer County Coroner Bob Duley said.
Wilkinson's hunting companions called authorities after he did not return to his stand or vehicle, and they were unable to locate him as night was falling.
The group was hunting in Spencer County south of Reo, in Ohio River bottoms.
Authorities spent about three hours searching for Wilkinson. They located him and the deer he had just shot about 9:30 p.m. Duley said Wilkinson was found about 100 yards from his stand and had dragged the deer only a few feet.
No foul play is suspected.
"It's just one of those unfortunate things," Duley said. About 40 people, including Wilkinson's relatives, assisted in the search. Assisting agencies were Indiana State Police, Spencer County sheriff's deputies and emergency medical service, Ohio Township Fire Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Ohio Valley Search and Rescue.

I feel kinda funny askin but, was the deer at least a buck? Maybe the size of the deer is what got the poor old boy so pumped up, not the drag. I mean if he only drug it a few feet he must have been pretty bad off. Anyway its a sad day when a fellow hunter passes. Our thoughts go out to his family in their time of mourning.

Sad but it should tell all of us over 45 that there are things that we need to do. One go to your doctor and get blood pressure checks, two exercise. I don't think you need to get out and run 5 miles a night or lift 5000 lbs of weights a week. Walking a couple of miles 2 or 3 times a week and some lite weights should help. I know that I do not do enough of this and I can really tell early in archery that walking a mile once or twice a week starting in Sept does not get it when packing a stand across a 30 acre and I run out of gas about 2/3 rds accross and have to stand and rest, by end of archery am making it okay. Then comes colder weather more cloths and we are back to the beginning for a short time. Another thing that we should do is invest in a two wheel deer cart and always keep it in the truck and go get it befor starting a drag. Those of us over 60 should also always get someone to help too. But hey these are just my thoughts.

Yeah.....I kinda would like to know if at least he had downed a good buck. Very sad... dragging a buck out is a chore even for a "fit" person. I'm with you fellas, at least he passed away in the deer woods.

I am grateful that he got to see the deer he killed and also this was not one of the stupid accidents that result from pulling up a loaded gun or not wearing a safety belt/harness on stand or the worst of all, a case of mistaken identity and being shot by another hunter.
