Me and my oldest son went out last night in search of him a deer. I had our blind set up at the other farm I hunt, so we grabbed the stake in the ground little 3 ft tall blind and took off to see if we could pull a shot off. We got all settled in the edge of a honeysuckle patch with the blind covering our front side. 20 minutes later I look out and there's a button buck working our way slowly. I get my boy up on my lap, get his shooting sticks ready and his gun perched up ready for a shot for when he got the chance. While we are watching that BB make his way very slowly, I hear a deer walk out in the field from right behind us. Here comes 2 older does and another BB. Needless to say, one of the does sees us there and they all start getting a little antsy. They were doing the ole head bob and were just not cooperating for him a shot. I kept asking him if he was on one, but he kept telling me that the wouldn't hold still long enough for him to get the cross hairs where they needed to be. After a couple minutes of that, the one doe flips the tail out and goes over the hill taking the rest of them with her. At that point, knowing he wasn't going to get a shot off anyway, I grabbed my gun and told him to duck, as he was still on my lap, and told him to hold his ears. When I laid his gun down in the leaves, I guess that doe heard it and she came back up over the hill to check us out one more time, which was a BIG mistake. I would have gave anything for him to have shot one, but seeing it was pretty much over as they were getting spooky, I figured rather than to just watch them run off, I better try to fill a tag. We needed an extra deer for the freezer anyway, so it all worked out. We waited until it started getting dusk and we went tracking. It was his first tracking job and he done a fine job helping me. While shining the light ahead of us, I seen her laying another 15 yds or so, so without saying anything to him, I gave him the light and told him to track it for me. Should have seen the grin on his face when he "found" that deer. He was soooo excited when we got home that his mommy thought he had shot it by the way he was acting. I was just as excited, as that was the first deer I took while he was hunting with me. That will be one hunt I'll never forget!!!!! I am also very proud of him for not just taking a shot anyway. He was being very patient and he didn't get the shot like I told him to take, and he held off the trigger. I couldn't be any happier with the way he handled it.
Here's a pic of him with it. He even helped me dress it too. He wasn't much on the smell though. LOL
