This has to be the worse opening weekend of gun season Ive ever experienced! Ive seen one small spike and two fawns in the last three days. Those of you that want the gun season out of rut got their wish this year and looks like it will be the same next year too. Im going to give it another few days and then bang the first doe I see. This has been some sad hunting on property thats produced nice bucks for over 30 years. h.h.

The rut just peaked in my area. Saturday the bucks were chasing the does everywhere. I shot a nice eight, my dad shot an eleven and another guy with us shot a nine. One of the things that has helped us is we have shot a ton of does, 20 in two years. this has really got the bucks up and moving.

Sorry to hear it was a downer for you. I definitely heard fewer shots then normal.
Deer action was pretty good here. A little slow Saturday morning, but in all good action. No rutting activity, but plenty of deer movement. I hunted the least amount in all my years on the gun opener. I hunted a total of 4 1/2 hours in two days combined on two different pieces of property. In that time I saw 7 bucks and 12 does. Could have shot 2/3 of them, but I never pulled the trigger. I put a buddy from Ohio on a real nice buck Saturday morning. Productive weekend and I barely hunted.
They can push that gun opener back even further as far as I'm concerned.

I heard less shots in Jay County also. I did manage to miss a nice 8 pointer at 87 yards Saturday morning tho.

I can't believe you guys aren't seeing very many Deer. I've seen several on my 15 acres here in Indiana, even in my front yard! Just got back from Kentucky and seen several down there as well. Could it be Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Blue Tongue) that killed off several Deer in a given area??

They say if your where the Does are you should see bucks. I saw 23 Does the 2 days but not a single deer with antlers.

The only difference a later start to firearms season made is that the mature bucks weren't moving nearly as much. A lot of young bucks were moving, from hunting pressure if not from rutting activity and a lot of them bit the dust as usual over the weekend. If the goal is to kill more immature bucks then having firearms season later is a great idea. There should be plenty of mature bucks left for muzzleloader season, at least for this year.

Didn't see a single deer all weekend. Only 20 checked in as of Sunday afternoon in my area. I have over 1000 acres of corn still standing within a couple miles surrounding my woods. The immediately surrounding fields are the only ones empty.

Something tells me that the harvest numbers will be WAY down this year from last.
With the herd being at near-record levels, I'd bet that we will see more EHD next year, and the DNR will look for ways to increase the harvest. Think we'll see a longer gun season?

I really don't think we need a longer firearm season, but rather MORE Hunting land access. Each and every year, as the Deer herd growns, there is less & less hunting land available to the average hunter. This is due to large amounts of hunting ground being leased up by outfitters, which inturn are sub-leasing out to fewer Hunters for big money. They are turning our past time into their business ventures, which is BAD for prudent wildlife management pratices.

You think thats bad I hunted 11 days in a row saw three deer toatl. No shots Dad got one doe. I spent close to 90 hours in the bush. Hunted various stands and ground blinds. Never saw things so messed up. It was our wettest two weeks in Ontario since 1954 and temps where above the norm. We usally hunt in snow but this year it was rain , rain, rain. Hopefully I'll fill my two tags with bow.
