In 2000 I bought a Browning Tornado Single cam bow. At the time it retailed at $300. It featured 5 1/2 inches of draw length, lots of speed, and was very quiet for it's day.( and still not too loud by today's standards )
In the years since, I have used it on and off, killing five deer with it. This year, surgery forced my brother to sell his Mathews switchback, so I took the opportunity to upgrade.
In the meantime, My friend's daughter emailed me asking if I had any old bows laying around. (boy, do I! ) I had plenty of good, redundant accessories laying around, so I figured I could make her a good deal.
The Browning maxed out at 64, but it went down to around 45, so I changed the draw length to 26, and backed it off.
Normally I make my own arrows, but in this case, time was of the essence, so I went to Wal-mart. They had good deals of plain black aluminum arrows, and to my shock, the right size that I needed. I went home and tuned everything in short order. In order to account for the shooter's stature, I had to guess at the peep hieght, so I scrunched my shoulders and crouched to help me guess at a starting point! I flung a few test shots. Not only was the bow quiet as creeping death, but it seemed to like it's new ammo just fine. After confirming my work and tightening some bolts, I headed to My friend's house.
Luckily, his daughter was there. To my extreme satisfaction, I had bumbled upon the right peep hieght! The draw length looked good and everything checked out. Her father and I did some basic shooting instruction for about 30 minutes, and she was sending them right in there pretty good. I had to run so she paid me for the bow and accessories, and off I went.
On Novemeber 4th, a big doe lead a fine eight pointer by her stand at 15 yards. A shot through the heart sealed the deal. The deer ran 50 yards and dropped within sight.
The Girl ain't no stranger to hunting, having killed numerous deer and turkeys with firearms. This was her first bow deer.
