I didn't hear very many shots this morning. Last year was a lot more quiet than what I considered "normal", and this year was almost silent.
I'm guessing by the time I shot my deer at 9:50, I'd heard *maybe* 5-10 shots. "Normal" would be uncountable- well over 30-40. Last year was maybe around 20 or so, IIRC.
It could be the creek was drowning out the shots (it was running high and making more noise than usual), but the guys at the check station said they hadn't had as many come in as usual...
Anyone else experience this?

Nope sounded like a couple of people were having their own private wars. As for me all was quiet on the western, southern, northern and eastern fronts.

Same thing here-Harold and I talked about that on the drive to Moodys-there have been opening mornings when the countryside sounded like a pretty fair Vietnam firefight-but today was almost eerily quiet. I didn`t count, but as I think back, I`ll bet I didn`t hear 15 separate gunshots this morning.
Moodys only had 20 deer in by the time Harold and I got there today, probably around 11:30-they said last year by that time they had over 100 deer taken in.

I used to hear upwards of a hundred rounds on opening day , this year I could easily count the shots . One guy sounded like he was firing a .50 cal BMG on the next road over , he took at least 8 shots before dark . The guy directly behind me also seemed to have aiming problems , I heard him fire at least 6 rounds .

Very quiet up here also....all 3 hunters on my place yesterday afternoon saw nothing, odd. Reminds me of the late 70s-early 80s, we had a tenat farmer who RARELY got his corn in, low deer numbers and the corn, lucky to see a deer.... Solohunter

I hadn't really thought about all of the corn still standing for some reason.
Between that and the likelihood that the mature bucks have most of the "hot" does in lockdown could be why it seemed slow. Not as much movement by the deer. All of the rain in the last week probably altered the travel routes somewhat too...

"Slow day"?
How about SLOW WEEKEND?
I'm in a spot that I normally see deer.
I have not seen a deer, any deer, in 3 trips to the stand and a total of 12 hours.
Maybe herad 8 shots Saturday morning, 5 this morning and NONE yesterday evening. Now this is KY and they nave been in a week, but deer just dont seem to be moving.
Talking to hunters hunting Indiana and getting the same impression. Not many deer being seen, very few shots being heard and very few big boys being checked in...

I think they are all catching their breaths for the rut. I can see it now... Mr. Big Buck and Ms. Hot Doe just relaxing and having a cigarette and Mr. Big Buck rolls over and says, " Was it good for you too, Honey?"

Very Slow! By the time we got out at 10:30 yesterday we heard a total of 3 shots, 1 which was my buddy's miss. Still A LOT of corn in standing in Wayne Co. - at least near where we hunt. The only deer I saw this weekend was the one I shot, very unusal for where we are hunting.

I personally saw around 16 Deer, and one of my KY hunting Friends, saw 27 plus the nice Buck & Doe he harvested. They seem to be hanging around dense brushy/wooded areas and comming out either in early morning or late evening. I passed up shots at several bucks of 4 & 6 pointers waiting for a better rack like an 8 or 10 pointer, which never showed up. Saw many scrapes and rubs where I was hunting. Also seen several Deer plus a nice 8-pointer on my property, here in Indiana, but I haven't done any hunting here yet.

I was hunting in Washington Cty and it seemed about normal although the fog was bad and I am sure that saved some.
I was in the stand for 12 1/2 hours without getting down. Got in way to early and got down at 5:30. Passed on deer several times that went on to be shot by my Dad.

I had opportunity to hunt private land in Clark Co. Got a pretty nice doe at 7:30, decided to not get in a hurry to field dress her (58 years old. Move slower these days) Just a few minutes later a 6 pointer came down the same trail, so I ended up with 2 deer by 8 AM. My time in the woods is limited, so I decided to take advantage of the first opportunity that presented itself.
If I get the time, and my muscles spasms quit (to be young and strong again!), I'll likely get out once more before season is over. Hope everyone has good success and great memories. parson

Got this ole girl at 7:30 in the Am on saturday.... I knew taking my crossbow was the right move, I always see does out the wazoo on opening morning of shotgun.. But this year I saw 3 and this ole gal was one of them... It was the quietest opener I have ever heard on the reservoir (mississinewa), in terms of shots being fired... I dont know what to think, is the rut over?? Or is the infamous october lull occuring right now?? I would have to guess the rut is winding down.. But it is very hard to tell...

Went to the farm that I share with several others this morning. Heard maybe 5-7 shot this morning, course there are fewer hunter here but that sounded slow to me. Watche two deer out in the corn field for about 45 minutes. One much bigger that the other but could not really tell what they were but it is my feeling that the big one was a decent buck body wise and the other a doe that was almost ready to breed. They were not running around alot like in the chase but she would trot in one direction and stop then change and trot. They finally went away. I think that the peak of the rut is over and bucks are resting and following does that are late and getting into esterous. But since yesterday was slow and today seemingly was worse but then again it was rainy I feel that the chase is definityly over.
