Just wondering if anyone else had their deer aged when they checked it in?
I specifically went to Arrows III in Lafayette so I could find out how old that buck-that-I-thought-was-a-doe really was. I knew Zimmerman would be there, he always is on opening day of shotgun...
I was impressed with his (Zimmerman's) memory too. He recognized me from 4-H shooting sports from probably 10 years ago when his son was in it with me! And I've got a beard right now to boot!
Oh, it was 1 1/2, BTW.

Yes ..... only the second time in 33 years of deer hunting. Checked in a doe at Fulton county check station at Nyona Lake, 2-1/2 years old.

This was the first one in several years that I've had aged, but if I get one on opening day, I know where to take it to get it aged... Dean has probably aged between 3-5 of mine over the last 15 years.

I stopped and talked to my taxidermist today and he said there were a LOT of 1 1/2 year olds checked in. Most of his mounters were 2 1/2 year olds.
Woodmaster's buck is by far the best he has taken in.

Not a whole lot of what you would call big bucks at the check in station that I was at. I was there most of the morning and a very large percentage of the bucks taken were yearlings.
The DNR should have stayed the course and got the final year's worth of OBR data. Then published that data before making a survey.
Too late now.

I have a feeling that the reason so many of the deer are young is because the older bucks have the does in lockdown and are not moving as much. Can't shoot it if you can't see it.
Now if opening weekend of firearms had been a week earlier, I think it would have been more of a "normal" year....

We moved down here about 4 1/2 years ago when my wife got a job teaching at North Put. She's not there now, but we still are. It's nice to get back up to the "home" woods, but I'm not liking the urban sprawl that's creeping that way.

I put my buddy from Ohio on a 8 pointer w/ broken brow (so he's a 7) on Saturday morning. Pretty good deer, that I had passed up several times with the bow. I was guessing the deer at 3.5 years on the hoof and confirmed this when he shot him with the muzzleloader. If he'd had his brow tine he'd have gone in the low 120's. The deer field dressed right at 185#. We checked him in and for the first time in 20 years of checking in deer, a DNR official was there and aged the deer. He confirmed it was a 3.5 year old deer. I made the comment that I had heard rumors that they aged the deer, but had never witnessed it. He said he's there every year. I told him that was funny because I check nearly all my deer at that location and I've never seen him there once on opening day or any other day for that matter. Here is a picture of the deer I put my buddy on.

Nice buck. What do you charge for your guide service? ;d Congrats to your buddy! The guide fee is cheap, it is the tip that costs him. ;D He's one of my best friends and all he wants each year is to take home a deer. Where he hunts in Ohio, he's lucky if he even sees a couple deer through all archery and gun seasons. Definitely not the Ohio that we all have come to know. In past years he's culled out a spike or two for me so he was due to take a nice one home with him. While I would have loved for this deer to have made it another year, I was even happier for my buddy to get to take him home. I get more satisfaction out making someone's hunt enjoyable then I do harvesting an animal for myself. He deserved a deer like that.

Not mine but my bro-inlaw's buddy had his aged at 2 1/2. Here is a pic. I would've guessed 3.5.
