4 of us are going to New Mexico September 12th with a bow. We will be hunting next to the Jicarilla Indiana Reservation. The lottery tags are $500 and if you any of us didn't get drawn then a landowner tag would cost $1500.
We made a deal between the 4 of us. What ever the total cost of the tags, we would split it 4 ways.
I didn't get drawn and the other 3 guys did. I'm lucky we made the deal and the tag cost me $750 instead of $1500.
It will be a drop camp. The outfitter will take us 12 miles in the mountains on horseback. He will have 3 wall tents set up for us. If we are lucky enough to kill a bull we will use a satellite phone and the outfitter will come back and pack the bull out with his horses. We supply our own food.
My buddy has hunted with this outfitter for 7 straight years and has killed some big bulls. He charges $1800 for the drop camp services and only takes 4 bowhunters a year. My buddy has told the outfitter he will take all 4 spots every year until he says different.

Ah, to be young again... If they would just invent some flat land elk I just might go after them again.. If you get one down please call me...but don't expect me to help you drag it out.

Is that $1800 for all 4 of you? $1800 per person. If I do get lucky enough to kill a bull, the money will be worth it just pack it out! LOL

lol ... ok. At first I thought you meant $1800 for the group ...... and I was completely blown away.
$1800 per person for a spike camp in a good location is still a smokin deal.
I have hiked into areas where I thought "If I kill something in here I am going to start a fire .... break out the salt, pepper and a camera ..... take some pics and then eat the stupid thing ...... 'cause there aint no way I am carrying one out of here".

Good luck on that deal Woodmaster. You are definitely headed into some prime elk country.
I did the archery elk thing a few years back in Idaho. We saw lots of elk, including some dandy bulls, the problem was getting within archery range. You'd see elk across a canyon, which would be an easy poke with a rifle, but by the time you got over there, the elk were nowhere to be found. After that, I kind of decided archery and elk weren't going to be in my game plans anymore. I'll use a rifle from here on out.
Can you shoot a cow on that tag? If so, take one given the opportunity. Elk is great eating.

The Jicarilla manage their animals very well.
I'm sure that you will be in prime territory.
Take a range finder and use it as the size of the elk and the distances out west will fool you.

Good luck on that deal Woodmaster...... Can you shoot a cow on that tag? If so, take one given the opportunity. Elk is great eating. Thanks! With the cost of elk permit, gas, food, outfitter fee & tip, it's strictly a good bull or nothing. We will be filming for the Wild Extremes show that can be seen on the Mens channel. I'm going for the hunting experience and not the meat. As with anything I hunt, the meat is a bonus for me. If I kill a nice bull that would be awesome but if I don't I'll have a great time anyway.

You can't help but have a good time, kicking around in the mountains out west.
Don't you envy those western residents? We have some good whitey hunting here, but Hoosiers got the short end of the big game hunting stick compared to our western counterparts. Most of those states have a half dozen species of big game their residents can hunt.
