My dad and I have always wanted to do a bear hunt and he just told me the other day that he was going to book us a hunt for next year. He said the whole trip was on him and told me to look around and find a good place. So does anyone here have any recommendations on a good place to bear hunt? I would like to stay as close to Indiana as possible that way I won't have to spend most of my week traveling. My dad will not fly so it will be a driving vacation. Would love to hear about some good camps that are within 10-12 hours away.

For high success, you'll probably want to go to Canada. Ontario is the closest, and there are many good outfitters in that province. Surely someone here has bear hunted Ontario. My buddy fished with Halley's camps and said they seem to run a pretty good hunting operation.

You can get to the Canadian border in 12 hours or a little less.
The further you get away from the border the bigger bears you will get into.
We have some Ontario hunters on here. Maybe one of them will chip on.

Alberta has a 2 bear limit. Makes a trip a little better investment.

Thanks guys - I have been doing some searching on the net for some hunt camps but it's always nice to get a personal reviews from a hometown guys. A two bear limit sure would be nice. Has anyone here a taxidermist tan a bear hide and head for you or even a full bear mount? I'm not sure which one I would do but was curious what something like that runs. I'm gonna need to get prepared for this hunt.

I sent you a PM. In addition to the information I sent you, I know a place to go in Quebec that is cheap and easier to drive to but not huge bears. But high % of kill and BOW only.

If the place Mullis is talking about is the place I'm thinking it is about a 19 hour drive from south central Indiana. I went there in "99" and the kill percentage was high. I'm going back this year in June. $1050 for the hunt, includes cabin rental but I can't remember if that includes tags or not. Good fishing there also.

I went to Alberta on a Spring bear hunt up by Peace River. It was call Chincaga River hunts. I killed two my buddy one. I think they can bait now and they do some bow hunts over bait.

I can give you some info on an Outfitter (Ralph Aikens)12 hours from Indianapolis. He's near Chapleau, Ontario. I've been hunting with him every year since 1992. A lot of hoosiers have got their first bear and second and third with Ralph. Ralph will be here next month for the Indiana Bowhunter Association banquet.
