Thanks!

What is the best sized (GRAIN) bullet for bear? What type of bullet is best? Brand? Thanks! When I hunted Black Bear out in Washington State (near Bellingham), with my Cousin; I took along my .308 with 180 grain loads. Most any brand of 180 gr. bullet will work, and also handloaded ammo. <Hope this answers your question>

For black bear you can use premium bullets (Nosler Partitions, Barnes Expanders, etc.) in .243 win and up. Browns and Grizz, well another story!

I want a bullet that will hold its weight when it goes in one side of a bear and comes out the other with good expansion while inside. My favortite is a Swift A Frame in 180 grains. Will punch a bullet dia hole going in and a two inch hole on exit and do a number on any black bear in the world. I would not be one bit shy about this same bullet if given the chance at a griz or large brown after seeing what it does to a 400 lb black. Shot placement is the key.

100 grain Wasps works for me.. 100 grain G5's are going with me too, but so is a heater for the 1st bear on this hunt then the bow or something along those lines. We will see, on the baited hunts bow for sure, but they do a lot of spot and stalk on the base of the rockies where I'm going so a .300 win mag for me!

I've seen several shot with a muzzleloader without issue. While I would rather bow hunt them I've shot a few with a deer slug(Win 1oz rifled) that went down hard. Remember if you are hunting over bait most your shots are inside twenty yards. I just picked up a 56 cal smoothbore that I may use this fall for bear.

I like good old fashioned Remington Core Lokt bullets. The deadliest mushroom in the woods. Also find them quite accurate.

Over bait..up close
A razor sharp broadhead.
Or a Lightfield slug.

Out of a muzzy see if you can get a Barnes X-Bullet - solid copper.
Otherwise a Hard Cast, paper-patched Maxi would be my pick.
But all of that really depends on the What and Where of the particular Bear.
There are some bearsI wouldn't try without a .45-70 levergun loaded with maxed-out 450gr Fuglies.

I killed an 8'-8" squared, +/-900 lb brown bear in 2005 with a 220 grain bullet. Down & out with one shot, but gave him a couple finishers because he was still kicking a little bit, and they bite. Size of bullet aint so important ... placement is. Any 130 grain or larger hunting bullet will cleanly kill any black bear.

Most of the Core Lokt's may be fine but I have had the same experience that several others have written about with the .308 150gr bullets: (see the reviews at Midway) namely they leave a poor blood trail. I won't use them anymore.

I have a good chance at going to Virginia this fall in pursuit of deer and bear. One of my best friends just moved down there and he spent many years living there previously. I need to decide on a rifle or two and start working up some loads. Man, I hope this all pans out. If it doesn't this year next year will be for sure!
