There's a chance that Dad and I might be going on a hog hunt for a few days in S.C. early next year.
I have no idea what the terrain and brush situation will be like at this point. Just wondering what could/should be used for hogs?
Right now I'm thinking I'll take the 12 gauge with slugs, possibly my bow for a second hog, and a centerfire. We have a .30-06, .270, 7mm x57 Mauser, and I may have a .30/30 ready by then. I'm sure the '06 and the .270 would be fine, and since the Mauser is essentially the same as the .270 (maybe not quite the same range), it should do OK too... Not sure about the .30/30, but don't really see any reason it wouldn't be acceptable. Might take it instead of the 12 gauge depending on how well it will group. I'm also thinking about packing my .357 MAX Contender along, depending on truck space.
Any and all thoughts are welcome!

all of the weapons you list will do it. its the shot that counts. shot them between the eye and ear for a DRT shot with guns. With a bow make sure you shoot a quartering away shot right behind the front leg. be sure to shoot them more forward than you would a deer because their vitals are more forward than deer. a center of the lungs shot like deer will end up a liver shot on a hog. good luck, h.h.

DRT?
I know for farm-raised hogs (feral probably aren't any different), between the eyes won't kill them, you need to shot between the ear bases..
I knew the vitals were in a little different position.
If/when this happens, I'm definately going to let everyone know!
Thanks.

DRT = Dead Right There...... I didnt mean between the eyes, I mean between the eye and ear. If you would draw an imaginary line from the eye to the ear hole and shoot them in the middle with a gun they drop right there. check this out... www.texasboars.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=156heres the site that it came from. go to the forums and theres lots of info on hog hunting. h.h. www.texasboars.com/phpBB2/

Thanks. Where I come from, DRT stands for Double Rope Technique- an arborist term.

shoot them in the sholder, bring the head home and clean it up, they make great mantel pieces.
12 guage slug thru the heart will work.

It didn't get shot down very fast when it was brought up the other night.
I'm going by the theory of "the more she hears about it, the more likely she is to just accept that it's gonna happen"! ;D
