Just returned from western Colorado elk hunt. I was lucky enough to whack a nice 5x6. Only one in our party that scored. It was pretty tough hunting and conditions, and we didn't see many elk.
He's no monster, but a pretty good public land bull, and he is going on my wall none the less. Made a cool 340 yard one shot kill.
Got home at 8:00 PM last night, so lots of junk too clean up and meat to deal with now. Meanwhile, I have the day off, so I'm going bow hunting this AM. Details and a photo to follow.

Thanks Woody. Not the greatest photography, but that is all I have presently. The straight on view of the rack conceals a couple points. He's no monster, but it was hard work and I'm proud to have gotten him. We hunted west central Colorado in the Grand Mesa national forest. Camp was about five snowy / muddy miles off the road by four wheeler, then we hunted from there on foot. Pretty tough hunting, didn't see many elk, and I was the only one in our party to get one.
This dude came on the fourth day. We set up where we had seen a couple cows the evening before, and at first light we could hear elk "chirping" just like in the videos. They were way up the hill in some heavy timber, probably 800 yards off. We started "chirping" back with cow calls and then he bugled a couple times. Anyway, within about a half hour, his curiosity got the best of him and the bull and three cows started down the hill. When he stepped into an opening at 340 yards, I put a good shot on him and that was all she wrote. Pretty unusual for bulls to respond to calling this late in the year. Needless to say, everyone was pleased.
We caped and quartered him where he dropped, and it took the outfitter and his helper three trips and most of the rest of the day to tote the quarters, cape, antlers, etc. out on pack frames. The kill was about 3/4 mile from the nearest place we could get a four wheeler. Times like those you are glad you hired an outfitter.
Made breakfast sausage, italian sausage, burger, steaks and loins and just finished up butchering yesterday.
Incidentally ...... That is public ground, you can buy a license over the counter and it's open to anybody to hunt that area no charge.
