Last Sunday morning it was 38 degrees in Palmdale, Florida and no wind. It was a cold ride to the Squirrel Hammock stand again. I parked the 4 wheeler and sneaked into the stand about 5:30 AM. The feeder fires at 6:15 AM so i sat back and waited on the hogs to arrive.
Daylight was breaking and i could see some what good but still no hogs came. A small doe walked right up behind me which was down wind and blew a warning, then took off. Dang! thats a warning all animals heed to. I figured that nothing would come to the feeder now.
About 15 minutes later the feeder fired but nothing came in, so I sat back and enjoyed the sunrise and the peaceful atmosphere of the everglades.
Ten minutes later i heard the soft grunts of the piglets coming from the cypress swamp. Then here they came around a bush and immediately started devouring corn.
The skinny red sow that i saw the day before was with them. I didn't want to shoot her so i just sat and watched them eat. Maybe ten minutes later a black sow came in and started to feed. I decided she would be the one i took today.
I stood up and got ready to shoot then waited for a good shot. The black sow was in the mud hole under the feeder almost in the exact spot as the red sow i shot the day before. She was broadside as I clicked off the arrow with a 100 grain 4 blade muzzy attached. The arrow went threw both ribs and stuck in a live oak root.
She took off snapping my arrow into. She ran out the back threw the blow downs into the tall grass pond. I watched her fall about 10 yds from where the red sow had went down.
The skinny red sow took off at the shot but the piglets just kept on eating corn. I waited 1/2 hour or so to see if any other hogs would come but none did.
Getting down i scared off the piglets and walked out into the pond looking for the blood trail. The blood trail was easy to find so i followed it a few yards and there was my pig.
I went and got the ATV but couldn't load her myself so i went back to camp. My friend and i went back and loaded her. She weighed 130 lbs.
The pictures are of the black sow laying in the grass in the pond and the piglets still at the feeder eating away.
I had a great time hog hunting at South Hackletrap which is located on Fisheating Creek in Palmdale Florida. h.h.
