The only reason that they are protecting it is because of the social aspect.
There is no biological reason for it.
Illinois protects their all white deer too.

Neat pic! Jefferson Proving Grounds used to be like that when it was ran by the military, protecting the white deer. A couple years ago I was drawn for a deer hunt at Big Oaks, and since it had changed hands and became a National wildlife refuge, I asked the DNR man in charge about the white deer, and if we could shoot one if the chance presented itself. He kind of rolled his eyes, and said yes, we want people to kill them, and unlike the Army, we consider whats best for the herd when deciding what to protect, not just if we think the animal is neat to look at. I never saw one though...
