A buddy of mine said he called in a small buck using the Growl call and rattling. I'll wait until I see them on clearance for $5 at Wal-Mart to grab one.

I was watching an episode of their show the other night and saw that advertised. I would be curious how it works around here?

i bought one and took it right back and got my money back. i thought it was two quiet. i figured it would be loud but i dont see how anything outside of a hundred yards could here it. i have the grunt snort wheeze and i tried the same type of call with it. i made the similar sounds that the growl call made and they were louder

What do you want to know?
I've had tons of success with both the MADD Growl and the Primos Roar this year. I haven't shot anything yet, but I have pulled in MANY bucks and one mature buck just without the head gear I was after. In nearly every case, I've had bucks literally run to the call.
Of the two calls, I like the Primos call better. It has more range, especially on the low end. The MADD call gets "ducky" real easy, but it's grunt is good and sharp.
I might have told this here, maybe elsewhere, but a week ago this past Monday, I personally witnessed both the growl and snort wheeze while hunting from a mature buck at 15 yards. He had a hot doe cornered in a thicket right in front of me. I could have shot this buck for a period of three hours at 15 to 20 yards. At one point he let out 4 consecutive growls. They started out low from his gut and finished off in almost a deafening tone. Literally, I could feel the sound reverberate in my chest. When he did this, the other bucks came from everywhere. I had bucks all around me. When one 7 pointer came in at the sound and went at the doe, the big buck stepped forward and did a snort wheeze. I was so close to him, I saw the spit fly when he did it. The coolest thing I've ever seen. Later he did the growl two more times and again, the area filled with bucks. He did the snort wheeze yet again to run off a small buck. I had visual contact with that buck from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm and could have shot him a thousand times. He's a stud, but not what I'm after.
My point to that story is that there is a growl or roar or whatever you want to call it, and the bucks to respond just like a MADD promotion video. I've had great reactions to both calls and have yet to run a deer off with them. The thing to remember is that they are rut oriented calls to take advantage of a buck during an aggressive two to three week period. You have to know how and when to call for it to work. It also helps to have a very good buck to doe ratio from managed land, which I have. The more competition between bucks by nature, then the better they are going to react to a call.
These calls are no different than a duck or goose call. You have to first know how to run the call, when to call, and probably most importantly when NOT to call. It is all in how you use the tool.
These calls do work though and work well in my experience so far.

Roar works good, it is a loud grunt tube depending on how you blow it, the pun intended.

Again, it is a tool in the white tail arsenal. Some guys swear by certain scent products for example. Me, I can't seem to get much of any results with scents. Some guys cuss decoys. Me, I've had tons of success with decoys. The list goes on and on.
What spooks a deer one day just might draw him in the next day. It is all trial and error. Maybe I've just been lucky this year with these calls. Who knows. In the past I've rattled in a lot of bucks, this year, I can't get a buck to come to the horns for my life. Next year the Roar might not work for me, who knows.
I certainly would not write these calls off though. If you are going to buy just one of them, I'd highly recommend the Primos call. It is just simply more versatile.

I understand about it being a tool. I was just going to wait until I heard some stories. I in no way expected it to be the miracle so many were making it out to be.
