Well, while were waiting for spring how about sharing some of your tips or tricks. I'm not talking about your honeyholes. Just some stuff maybe someone else might not have heard of or tried. I'm always willing to try something new to increase my catch. Here's a couple of mine.....
1. Take a black sharpie and draw 2 large dots on your white curly-tail grubs for white bass and crappie. I don't know why but I have seen it outfish a plain white several times.
2.Use long rods. When river fishing in the spring I use a 9, 10, and even 12' rods. Several reasons why. You can cast farther. Use lighter line. Less rip-outs on hook sets. Also, they are alot more fun.
3. Try that fake crab meat from Walmart. It's got good color, its firm and it catches catfish like crazy. Makes for a nice snack too.
I'll post more after I see how people reply.

I river fish for Northerns once in a while and have been using Frozen smelt from the grocery using a large hook and a bead works for me and left over bait cook up on shore for lunch.

I'm a pan fisherman at heart, big bluegills and crappies are my preference. Best tip I could give anyone on those species is you need to fish hard from early April through about mid May or you'll miss the best fishing of the season.
Minnows under a float and fish in the brush and treetops for crappie. If you're not snagging and busting off a few bobbers, you aint fising in thick enough cover.
When the water hits 60-64F look for the bluegill to spawn in the shallows and you can clean house on the big ones. A hook with a half of a night crawler, no sinker and no bobber works great. Bobbers and extras spook them in the shallows and don't get too close to them either or they'll spook. If that half night crawler is too light for you to cast far, add one of those clear casting bubbles about 3' up the line for additional weight. Those fuzzy little sinking spiders tipped with a bee moth work great too.
