I will be tying deer hair poppers soon. That is when the real mess begins.
Those craws are great for slow current. The rabbit fur makes the fly come a live, but also makes it hard for me to cast, it gets heavy.
Pigeon, please tell me your not a worm drowner.

Tim, need to get you down/over here sometime on the Big Walnut. Dad and I have fished it a couple of times (yes, drowning worms mostly! , and there's some decent fish in there.

My poppers are not the prettiest things, but they pop. I don't sell them, it's hard enough for me to find time to make flies for myself.
The Big Walnut sounds like a good time to me.

No worms,, but I have cheated and used softshells when they are in season.. Them biggens cant resist them.. Mostly drifting down river casting shad-raps or wee-craws and such.. The closer to the bank you can throw it,, the better your chances.. I have never tried the fly thing,, but yours sure do look good!! ;D ;D ;D

Soft craws are deadly. My flies will never compete w/those. But it's fun trying. Thanks pigeon.

Do you ever get up to Chad Millers shop in Lafayette??? Chad closed his shop in Lafayette. He still has one in Zionsville. I pick his brain every chance I get. He is a very good fly fisherman, and not just for smallies, but fish all over the world. I known him for years.

I used to hang out in his shop all the time when I lived over there. Chad is a great guy and one heck of a fisherman. Where is the shop in Zionsville?

I wave a flyrod quite a bit in the summer, you know, just to kill time until hunting season. The creeks I wade for smallies are pretty tight, so I usually use spinning tackle. However, when the mayflies hatch, I can be found at my Mom & Dad's with a 2 weight anxiously watching a Grey Wulff.

A 2 weight?! I caught a few smallies on my 3 weight and found it just not enough. I did hook into a big 18" or so w/it one time while fishing for sunnies. Kept him on for 5 or 6 jumps but I couldn't do anything w/him.
I haven't tied any Grey or royal wulffs in years. I seem to do better w/bigger flies.
