Ice fisherman dies in Noble lake
A 51-year-old Albion man was found by divers in a Noble County lake more than an hour after a 911 call was made saying the man had fallen in Tuesday evening.
Stephen W. Koontz had been ice fishing on Big Lake in Noble County on Tuesday when thin ice apparently gave way underneath him and he fell in, an Indiana conservation officers report said.
The Noble County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call about 5 p.m. saying Koontz had fallen into the lake. The Noble Township Fire Department helped conservation officers break the thin ice with its rescue boat so divers could get to the area, the report said.
Koontz was found by divers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources at 6:32 p.m. about 60 yards east of the west shore in about 21 feet of water. His body was taken to St.
Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, where an autopsy will determine the official cause of death, the report said.
Indiana conservation officers were assisted by the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, Noble County medics, Albion Fire Department and the Noble County Coroner’s Office.
