I think the most important thing is experience.
When we were to young to hunt my cousin lived next door to the Tack-L-Shack in Dale Indiana. We would hang out there every weekend of gun season waiting on our dads to return from hunting. Now ... this has been many a year ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday. There were a hundred or so deer checked in each day during the weekend days of gun season. My cousin and I, from the time we were each 8 until we turned 11 or so, saw so many deer we could tell you weight within a few lbs and age.
I still have a pretty good eye for field judging because I saw literally thousands of deer in that few years period of time.

Great subject Woody-which makes me want to ask-would you guys go to the Bragging Boards Photo area and look at the photo of the trail cam buck I posted? Some say it only looks like a 2 1/2 old buck, and I find this hard to believe.
