What you need to do is early in the spring when crappies are on their beds, is go out and dig a hole about 3'x3' in shore close to where their bedded and fill it with ashes, oak ashes are the best. Now the next morning go and quietly sprinkle a can of peas all over the water. When the crappie comes up to take a pea, kick him in the ashhole!
My grandpa got me with this joke when I was 10 and I've never forgotten it.

No, No No Decatur .... that's how you catch a Polar Bear.
Cut a big hole in the ice. Sprinkle a can of peas around the hole for bait. When he comes up to take a pea, you kick him in the ice hole.
