I've got an old 5 gallon drywall bucket with a lid that I usually sit on against a tree. The bucket is painted with a flat finish spray paint so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. If you've practiced shooting while sitting, it won't be a problem. If you can sit in some weeds/brush to help give you some cover, that's even better. Just make sure you have adequate room to draw without having stuff in the way. Another pointer that I learned a long time ago from my Dad (you'd be wise to do it with a tree stand too if you don't do it already) is to clear off the leaves in a 2-4' wide patch where your feet will be. Do that when you first set up, and you will make a LOT less noise while you are there. Just bought a blind tonight that I should be able to bowhunt out of, so I can't speak to the effectiveness of them- yet!

Setup on the leward wind side of the hill among the undergrowth within shooting distance of the lower travel routes. Open up a shooting lane. Good luck! I will be riding out the wind 30' up in a poplar tree overlooking a leward wind side of a mid-elevation bowl that does not catch the brunt of the wind.

Ground hunting is so much fun. You do it and succeed, you will ground hunt all of the time. I ground hunt 90% of the time. I do not use a ground blind for deer-only turkeys.
Keep the wind in your face. Make yourself cover from cuttings. Cut shooting lanes. Be aware of what is moving around you. Pick a tree that will conceal you from behind. The majority of the deer that have made me on the ground have done so from behind.
Good luck...let us know how you did.

Good advice here. I agree especially with clearing the dirt at your feet of noisemakers, and concentrate on cover BEHIND you rather than in front of you. Our instinct is to hide behind something, but it is much easier to conceal yourself with a dark background such as a huge tree, or better yet, a tangle of vines or foliage, behind you. Also, we tend to slack on the facemask and gloves when in a tree, but in my opinion they are vital on terra firma. I have shot three deer from the ground with a bow, one at twenty feet, and I agree with Dawg that it is one awesome experience.
