How many of you guys has hit and killed a deer with your car or truck? I have been lucky so far in my 28 years of driving and never have. My Mother-in law has hit and killed more deer than most have with a gun or bow. She's not a hunter, but needless to say she's not a supporter of the OBR, most of hers have been bucks , but she will kill, anything that walks out in front of her. If it was legal I would mount a stand on her car and hunt ;D Does anyone know of any BC bucks killed by a driver in Indiana? I bet there has been some big deer killed that was never reported, or hit and escaped only to die later. I know a guy that works for the state highway department and he has removed some nice ones that were hit. Now is the time it seems that more deer are hit and killed, so keep an eye out and drive safe.

Only one - a big old doe. She actually hit me. She ran into the left side of my truck as I was keeping a careful eye on a deer standing on the right side of the road. I was on my way to go deer hunting at the time. .

Suicide.... some deer are just fed up with hunters constantly arguing over silly things like OBR and legalized weapons..... You'll only see more deer suicides until we all just get along!

The question I have never been able to get adequately answered is:
While I know you generally aren't allowed to keep a car-hit animal, is it or is it not illegal to dispatch a gravely injured animal at the site of a collision?
I hate to see an animal suffer, but I'd hate even more to lose my gun(s) and go to jail for applying coup de-gras with my CCP...

Ironsights, that would be a good question for the ask a CO a question forum, but I'm pretty sure a law officer is susposed to do the deed. And most of the time you are given the option of keeping the deer if you are the one who hit it. They will issue a special tag to put on it saying it was a road kill.

I'm an Insurance Agent so you really do not want me to answer this question !!!!
I have only hit one with my personal vehicle but I take claims from many, many throughout the year.

I was traveling down 37 south of Indianapolis last year and saw a police officer with his sidearm pointed at a doe and his other hand covering for blood splatter. The woman that hit the deer had her fingers in her ears on the back side of her vehicle, facing away. I thought it was pretty funny. At least no one got hurt, unless there was ricochet.

I've hit two, first one survived as far as I know, but totaled my POS Mazda pickup. Truck was only worth ~$400 and the damage was ~$600... That was probably 7-8 years ago.
Second one was around 4 years ago, killed her on the spot. I was on my way to work so she laid there for a few days. Damage was ~$1700 to my Dodge. The damage is still there, now it's just battle scars! ;D
