I have always heard that if it is a windy day you should just stay home and not bother hunting. I agree when I am in my tree and I feel like the wind is about to blow me out of it, but I can never get myself to stay home. I am of the mind set, deer may not move as much on a windy day (were talking gust in the mid 20's or more) but you never know what deer might just walk past your stand. I know in Madison County we can get a total of 8 deer (if you muzzle load) so I look at it as wind or no wind I am going out. With a wife and three kids my opportunities are not as much as they used to be, so if I want to fill my freezer I go when I get a free moment.
Saturday is calling for winds from the NW in the 10 to 15mph range, with gust up to the low 20's. For one of my stand set ups this wind direction is ideal, so I will be in my tree at 6:45 Saturday morning.
What do you guys/gals think? Does a windy day mean stay home?

The only thing I know is you can't kill the off of the couch..I don't climb the tree on a real windy day.I like to set up in a holler, and sometimes make a quick ground blind..I would go whenever I could if I'm short on time.Like you said, you never know when a deer may walk by.The doe I shot on saturday only took a total of maybe 30 mins(from the time I got in tmy stand).

I don't like to hunt when the wind is howling.....or pouring down rain.
If we get 5 or 6 days straight of windy weather they will have to move. Deer still have to eat.
It also seems to be a lot windier in the tree than at ground level.
Some hunters only have so much time to hunt and have to make the best of it.

Mega windy day- gusts up to 35-40 mph, I was in a ladder stand swaying a little, nailed a huge doe this year. while you'll see fewer deer, and the ones you see probably more skittish, the ability for your scent to be blown away and any movement lineing up for a shot is camoflaged a little better- I say go if the chance arises. Like said above. A remote in your hand won't kill a deer. And besides- you can't rake leaves in the wind.... wait until after the wind dies down to rake, beeter yet, wait until spring!

I have seen & taken some big rascals on windy days (10+ mph), especially when they start getting more active with the onset of the pre-rut.

hey cleetus, i also hunt madison county and live on the west side of anderson, i mainly hunt in owen county, about wind....i don't prefer to to hunt on these days but sometimes you going to hunt no matter what. i do know your chances are good when a deer does come close to your set-up. he's or she is not as focus as a calm day.another point is the time of year and now is the time to be out there, last night i seen a buck trailing for a hot doe, plus on the way home a deer ran out in front of me ,a close call.so i would suggest ,you get a chance to hunt go. another point , go to a check station and look at last year harvest pictures, notice the days of harvest ,it will be nov. 4- nov 10- nov. 12 nov. 17 get the picture!. time is verrrrrry close to the best hunting and wind can help you or wind can make you feel like being on the couch. and take the advice of LawrenceCoBowhunter, he's right on......good luck.......take a youngster on your next outdoor experience.........turkey scout

Unless you can pick and choose your days at will, than sometimes you just have to do it... I hunted down here tuesday morning and the winds were blowing 15+ nearly all day...Which is howling for Georgia...I saw deer all morning. I dont mind the wind too much, but do notice that deer can get a little more skittish because of the scent that is being blown around more than usual...Just watch the wind direction more carefully and you have to use your eyes a lot more than your ears.

I have seen a few deer on those windy days, but for the most part it means stay home for me and take in some football. I can pretty much pick and choose when i hunt, so if its going to be a day with 30 mph gusts, i stay home. I had planned on heading out saturday until i saw the forecast for gusts up near 30. I think i will hold off until Sunday morning, deer should hopefully be a little more active after sitting tight all day saturday.
