Sunday a hunter ed grad from this summer, and friend of my son came up from Indianapolis to deer hunt. He actually got a shot at a goofy buck- one antler up, one antler curved under his head. The boy got too excited and shot under the deer. We found white hair and a little gristle. no blood anywhere. He was shaking like a leave on the only tree in South Dakota. I think he repeated, "oh, man, I shoulda waited" close to 70 times between climbing down and the drive home. He hadn't waited for the deer to come into range inspite of the repeated "waits" I whispered in his ear. We saw a total of 11 deer in two and a half hours of hunting time, and still made it to church on time.

Great story... Now that he has that out of the way he will be much calmer next time .... or maybe i should say he will have better control over it next time ... in his head he will still be screaming.... (I know I still do and i have been at it for years)

On the plus side, he told several of his friends at BroadRipple HS that he was going deer hunting. He said they all wished they could go too. He's coming back up again before season is over.

Just tell him, just like I told my daughter when she missed one with the muzzleloader. It was your first miss and it definately won't be your last. I've been doing this for 20 years and still shock myself that I miss sometimes. The great thing is that you had him out there and he'll be back. Buck fever is a powerfull drug.

Well he learned ... bet he won't have a problem waiting next time. Better luck to him next time. Hopefully I won't have the same type of story when I take my son out this M/L season.
