The only thing I can think of would be enforcement consistency... under present reg, if someone has squirrels in their possession and transporting them between Jan 1-31, they can say they were shot south of US 40.
I don't know if the original split date was based on nesting/breeding dates for the northern vs. southern part of the state...?

I've always thought that the differing dates was a dumb idea anyway , how much difference could there be in the breeding activity between northern and southern squirrels anyway ? A few days perhaps ? It wouldn't make a dime's worth of difference either way .

Most of the squirrels up north head to Florida after Christmas. HA!!!!
