Would anyone support extending bow season through the month of January? There is no biological reason that I can think of for not extending the season. I know I would take advantage of bowhunting during jan. IMO the season ends way too early. Anyone else with thoughts on this?

The only problem (as I see it) that we might run into is accidently shooting bucks that have already dropped their antlers for does.. Illinois has a January firearms hunt for antlerless deer in selected counties..

I have hunted Ill. archery for the past 12 years. I live 5 minutes from Ill. I have seen plenty of bucks with head gear well into feb. and early march. I have been a walker during the late anterless firearm season over there and always see plenty of bucks. Don't start finding sheds till the 2 or 3 week of March. maybe true in Northern Ill. about antler drop. but not where i hunt. Besides with a bow you SHOULD BE ABLE TO TELL if he is a buck that had shed.

Yeah.. you are right .. for some reason I was running it back thorugh my mind what discussion went on in Illinois about the late firearm season. On that one there could be some dropped antler mistakes. For bow that shouldn't be near the problem. But, I have seen one horned bucks in late December around here. I would think that some folks' freezers might be getting down somewhat by then and might need replenishing..

As long as it was a continuation with no changes to the current regs with regard to crossbow use I would like to see it .
The reduction counties especially would benefit from it as more does would be taken . I think if it also offered a late season EAB and sliding scale pricing doe tags in those counties it could also get more folks in the woods too .

Another week or two into January wouldn't hurt a thing. That would be some prime hunting, when it's real cold and they start gathering up.
Would be darned few hunters out, so increased harvest would be minimal.

I wouldn't be out there and I bet very few would be. But I don't see where it would hurt anything.

I'm for it. Generally it would be too cold for me to try and draw a bow, but if a mild weekend set in, I'd be out there. I really don't think it would hurt the herd any. 95% of the hunters are probably burnt out or tagged out by then anyways. Just offers some additional opportunity to those who want to take it. Also would allow for more does to end up in freezers and there is nothing wrong with that, IMO.

I am for it as long as it would not have any ill effects on the deer herd.

You get into late Jan. then your into late pregnancy of most all of the does that were bred in Oct-Nov time frame. It gets to be a social issue for some folks to shoot and kill a whole family with one shot. You can get away with about 3 weeks into Jan. without having much concern and won't get much flak from the non-hunting public.
It's probably better to move the season up into Sept. instead of real late in Jan. The is no biological reason not to hunt the whole month of Sept. All of th fawns will be old enough to survive on their own. Ask for it, and you'll probably get it. That's what we did in Ky. 3 years ago. Should work for you as well.

They could extend it through the end of Febuary and it won't have any impact. Generaly, it's just too cold to be out there sitting for hours on end, and folks won't do it. Therefore, you can't use the herd reduction "argument" to get this passed.
It's also going to be a tough sell for the additional "recreation" days, since bowhunters already have from Sept. 15 on to get their recreation in.
