Ok I know we've covered the whole best brand for the money thing but I've had my eye on a pair of Leupold Wind River Cascade binos. I can get the 8 x 42 or the 10 x 42 for about $300 I have a Leupold scope and love it so I trust the brand I know Swaraski (sp) is a great brand but a bit too rich for my blood. I would like to make it back out west for another elk hunt in the future will an 8x 42 be ok or should I go for the 10 x 42, if all I hunted were big "out west" expanses there would be no question I'd go with the 10x but will a 10x really be worthless in the type of areas we have around here? ie fields and woodlots. I don't want to go to Colarado or Montana or wherever and not have enough "scope" but I dont want to be arround here and have too much, what do you guys think?

If you go to Cabelas the Wind Rivers have great reviews. They are made in Japan for Leupold by someone but I forgot who, I don't believe it's Nikon eventhough I pretty sure Nikon makes all of Leupold lenses.

Personally, I would go with the 8x.
I hunt Colorado every year and 8x does everything I ask of it. I think a 10x might make it a little tougher on the eyes because of movement.

Thank you, I kind of figured that would be the case, I just waned to be sure I actually looked at a buck w/ 7x tonight... almost threw the d@mn things out the window! I'm pretty excited. SWILK, what brand do you use? If I wear my glasses will the Leopolds be able to adjust? HH, I found the site thanks for the info!

I use Pentax DCF SP's .... 8x43.
I have never used the Leupolds but any binoc's that have adjustable eye-cups (and Im sure the Leupolds do) should be just fine with your glasses.

I'd go w/ the 10x42's. Leupold scopes are darned nice but their bino's aint in the same class. They aint bad, but aren't anything special either. No better that a Steiner that can be had a bit cheaper. A real nice mid range priced bino is made by Kowa. Check them out. They get pretty close to the quality of Swarovski, Zeiss & Leica.
Sometimes you can catch the 8 power old style Zeiss binos on sale for around $700 which is a dandy bargain. Also, there are a few dealers that specialize in used high end optics. Most of the major names have a lifetime guarantee, so you're not risking much buying used stuff.

I have a pair of Burris Signature series in a 10x32. They are really nice.
