My brother has the same set of radios. We hunted some ravine bottoms about 1/4 mile apart and they wouldn't reach. The 14 mile rating must be over water.

I had a set of Midland radios that luckily I purchased from Cabelas. 1.5 years and three sets later they applied the money I had spent for the Midlands towards a set of Unidens that have performed well. If you are looking to buy radios look into the Cobra micro talks. The Unidens are rather large and the Cobras are half the size and a little cheaper to boot.

I bought the Cobra micro talk 8 mile range two years ago on sale for 40.00 for two with a charger. The reason i did was because of their size. Now they are up to 15 - 20 mile in range. mine work OK but wont go over a high ridge from one side to the other. Up here were i hunt its fairly flat so they work about 1/4 the distance advertised.
I tell everyone to buy the longest range with the cheapest price on these kind of radios. h.h.

FRS radios are severely limited by terrain, on flat unobstructed ground they work great. If you want to talk to your bud from anything over 1/2 mile you should seriously consider marine or shortwave sets.

I have a set of the Motorola Talkabout 250's and I think they were rated for five miles. I have used them for some 2 mile conversations in Glendale FWA.
