.............is an article John Barsness wrote that does a good job laying out the basics on current binoculars, and follows his book Optics for the Hunter. www.24hourcampfire.com/binoculars.html

Good glass is one of those funny things .... you cant really understand what the difference is until you have owned a pair.
The first pair of decent glass I bought was the Bushnell Legends ..... excellent for the price. I sold them and I bought a pair of Pentax DCF SP's that I still hunt with today.
In the future I will upgrade yet again to Swaro's, Leica or Zeiss.
There is no comparison between the Wal-Mart specials I hunted with for so long and what I use now.

I have no optics that cost over $75. Scopes or binoculars. I probably never will, and optics in the $1,000 range are insanely expensive to me. Same principle I apply to tools. I buy craftsman. Now, I know SnapOn are better tools, just as Zeiss are better optics, but they are not 10-20 TIMES better. And are therefore not worth 10-20 times more money to most people in MY income bracket. Now, of course, if you make enough that money does not even factor in to your collection of 'toys'. . . . I don't. If I made a hundred thousand a year, I can assure you my gun collection would increase, and my optics would be of better quality.

You have it right Swilk. Unless you've really used a good pair for a while, you won't appreciate their value, and taking a look through them at the counter at Sportsmans Warehouse doesn't show you much. I have a pair of Swarovski 10x42's that are great binos. They are a little heavy, but the optics are superb. Will be getting a pair of the mini Swarovski binos for bow hunting sometime this summer. Don't need the big 10x42's when all the cover is on the trees, etc.
Wish I'd have caved in and bought the good stuff 20 years ago. For what I blew on cheap Bushnells and Simmons stuff that didn't last long, fogged, couldn't handle wet weather, etc., I would have been well on my way to paying for the good stuff. Plus the Swarvos, Zeiss, Leicas, etc. all have lifetime warranties.
For rifle scopes, I use Leupold. Same story here, plus they have the lifetime guarantee. You can't hit what you can't see.
