I own a pair of the Nikon Monarch ATB's in 8x configuration. I've had them for 3 seasons now and absolutely love them. I like the 8x better then the 10x. I can't hold the 10x's steady enough to take advantage of the magnification.
When I was in the market for binos, I had to set a spending cap. Mine was $300 ... not a penny more as the wife was with me. So I went to Cabela's in Dundee and tried out every piece of glass they had in the $300 and under category. At that time, IMO, the Nikon's were hands down the best piece of equipment in that price category. I think I paid $285 for them.
My recommendation is, if you can, get both that you are interested in in your hands and settle on which looks best to you.

I have the Monarch in 8X also and wouldn't trade them for anything! I would totally agree with DEC that the 10X would be very tough to hold still enough to utilize the additional magnification.

I also have the 8X monarch, and agree the shaking defeats the power for me. Some have a steadier hand then me, or fitted on a tripod or other mounting device
