Had an AWESOME hunt this morning in Northern Hendricks county. Best day in the tree stand from the standpoint of numbers in a long time for me. I saw 2 NICE shooter bucks, and a young 6 pt buck. I gonna guess the 2 shooters in the 125-135 ball park - both looked like good 8 pointers. I know there's one bigger in the area, but I would have taken either of these bucks this morning. Unfortunately the only shot I could have taken was at the 6 pt. Along with the 3 bucks.......I saw several fat does probably 8-10 different does........AND 2 coyotes mixed in during the morning. I took a shot as one of the 'yotes walked by and I missed high on a 26 yard shot. I should have hit it but I rushed the shot after he looked up as I drew on him.
Here's the best part to this report - the 2 shooter bucks came in grunting their heads off at each other. They never got closer than about 40 yards from me.......there was a big cherry tree that had fallen in between my stand and where they were.......but I could see them come into the woods from the corn (I heard their grunting before seeing them). They never hooked up but I was sure they were gonna.......the bigger one kept running the smaller of the two away. VERY aggressive grunting and posture.... It was too cool. Here's the other cool part........the smaller buck was hounding the does, kept giving them the sniff and running them around lightly. He came in with about 6 does all to his self......I'm sure if one of the other bucks would have heard him it would have been "game on" for the little boy.
So......here's where I get to tell you that A. I didn't have my rattle bag OR grunt tube which might have been useful in pulling one of the shooter bucks in.........AND......no, as 911 already asked, I don't have any pictures. I went and left my digital in the glove box of the truck.
Anyway.....it was an awesome hunt. I'm gonna stay out tomorrow and try it again on Friday. I'd love to bag a big one the day before waterfowl comes in........ hopefully the deer Gods will be smiling upon me!
