Friday Oct 6th,
Had a meeting at 10:00 a.m. North of my house, so it didn't make sense to go to work then go back up to the meeting..........right !
So anyway I haven't made it a big deal of it because I wasn't sure if I was going to hunt with it or not, but I've been shooting a Wing Slim Line Pro recurve since I got back from Colorado. With some tips from a buddy on another board, I finally got confident enough to hunt with it. Friday morning was the first time I took it out.
I had just placed a ladder stand close to a bunch of Oaks that were dropping acorns like crazy.
About 8:15 a year and a half old 9 pointer snuck in feeding on those acorns. I let him go and he wondered up the ridge and kept feeding on the acorns. I was watching him and looked around doing a routine surroundings scan and saw 3 deer feeding toward me. The biggest Doe was in the lead and closing fast.
Friends I must tell you, it has been a long time since I have been so rattled from shooting a Doe ! I got shook up to say the least !!!
She stopped broadside just like their supposed to and I let fly with my traditional Carbon Express arrows and 125 grain Muzzy's LOL. The arrow hit a little far back, looked like a liver hit to me. The Doe took off toward the 9 pointer and as they came face to face she stopped and then turned and ran back in my direction. When she stopped and I turned to get another arrow, I lost sight of her.
The other deer, yearlings, never knew anything was amiss, they continued to feed.
I assumed the Doe had fell where I lost sight of her. A couple of minutes later I was surprised to see her sneaking back to my stand. She laid down about 20 yards from my stand with her back facing me and her head out of sight. I tried and tried to be able to see her head but it was blocked by brush. I finally decided to try to get another arrow in her just to be sure. I sent another one headed her way but shot low and hit a big rock she was laying beside sending sparks flying and the sound of my traditional Muzzy and Carbon Express being ruined !
The deer never moved a muscle. I assumed she was dead.
I waited a few more minutes because I wanted the 9 pointer to leave on his own but he never did. I finally decided to get out as I had to get to my meeting. I turned around to gather my gear and just glanced back and could see her head....up and looking around. So I get #3 arrow out and take another shot and get a good hit on her. She took off and I lost sight of her after she ran 60 or 70 yards.
As I snuck out of the woods I jumped the 2 yearlings which I took as a good sign. They will stay put a lot of times when the adult goes down.
I'll save you the details of the rest of my afternoon, but I returned from my meeting and again jumped the yearlings but started to second guess my shot. So I again backed out and waited another couple of hours. When I came back the yearlings were there again and I walked right up to my first recurve doe. Total distance traveled was less than 100 yards.
