I was pulling my fishing boat friday night and my Blazer starting shifting hard. My engine light came on it was the code for transmission slippage. Now that I have taken the boat off it has stopped shifting hard and the light is off. My buddy told me that maybe the problem was that I should have been using 3rd gear when going up a couple of big hills. I was planning on taking it somewhere but know I am not sure what to do. My buddy also told me that he could change the transmission fluid and filter or something and that may fix it. Car has 113k and I am pretty transmission fluid has never been changed. What should I do?

Get the fluid and filter changed for sure.
One of our F350's at work throws a "transmission slip" code all the time. It's rather annoying when it does because you loose the speedometer and odometer. Chances are that your Blazer is the same way- if it detects even the slightest slippage it'll throw the code.
Get the fluid and filter changed, and when you are towing a load do NOT have your overdrive on, unless you are going down the interstate on a flat. Not sure how yours is set up, but a lot of the newer vehicles have a "tow/haul" mode instead of an overdrive "on/off". Either way, hit the button when you are pulling the boat.
HTH.

It's an 89 and does not have a tow load button. Should I just drive it in 3rd when I am towing the boat even if it is on flat ground?

If it's got an OD "off" button, push it. Don't have your OD "on" when towing if you have the option.
If you don't have the option to turn off the OD, then yes, I'd say put it in 3rd gear, but watch your speed and your engine temp. Make sure your cooling system is in good condition. OD is probably OK for long flat spots where your engine RPM will be up, but if your RPM will drop below 1500-1800 while in OD, I'd put it in 3rd or take the OD off.

For sure get the fluid changed. It's time anyway, and it could save you big $$$$$.
I had a truck with around 100,000 on it that began taking too long to shift, then finally moving with a rough thump. Desperate to head off a huge bill, I tried a fluid change. The fluid was so shot it resembled tobacco juice. The truck never had any more transmission problems.
