I've finally had it with Comcast! I'll go buy an antenna somewhere before staying with them any longer.
I thought I'd try my luck with the satellite providers first, though.
Any opinions on the comparison between Dish and Direct?
I've been trying to decipher their ads and it seems they both (probably, maybe) have a couple of hunting shows in the packages that I'd be interested in, and I think I can access the part of the sky for either with about the same amount of trouble (looks like I'll need to mount the dish on the deck and route the coax through a short distance underground).
Costs for what I want look similar.
So it looks like the most important deciding factors will likely be service and reliability.

Approximately 15 months ago, I switched from DirecTv to Dish Network-did it because of Dish offering a DVR, and DirecTv not being willing to offer anything to an existing customer. BIG mistake.
DirecTv had MUCH beter customer service, Dish, not so much. As soon as the little lady and I decide when we`re tying the knot, we`ll be getting back to DirecTv for sure.

I went from Dish to direct TV, and love it, also love my Tivo as well, customer service is good also. Go DirecTv and i think you will be happy? Also get a Tivo and enjoy and never miss another show, i prerecord all my hunting shows and fast forward through all the commericals.

I had dish about 6 years ago. During the summer it went away from about 1:30 to 5 or 6 P.M. because of the sun or something. Called customer service about it and was told that was a weather problem like during rain storm. There was nothing I could do about it. Yeah right. If you want to go satellite then try Direct.

I did the exact same thing as Hunter480 because I too wanted the free DVR. I have a 2 year contract with Dish that will be up in September and when it's up I will once again be a Direct TV customer and will never look back.
My Direct TV never went out but my Dish Network goes out with the slightest wind. I'm not fond of their customer service either.

We switched from dish to direct tv for some reason when we moved. I was really peeved because the package we ordered had the outdoor channel with the basic package. We got it, and no outdoor channel. Some BS named "Versus." The "Info" function sucks. It says something really insightful like "action, clint Eastwood." or "Science fiction, 2003," where the dish would give the date, the title, and often a short plot summary. I will say that direct tv is reliable in all but the worst rain.

Another thing I discovered was the info you received from the "info" button was dependent on the model of receiver you had. The receiver I had didn't display much but my in-laws direct TV receiver would give them a story book when they hit the "info" button .

I'd really like History international and an outdoor channel.

How about NO TV? I haven't even had Antenna access since ... well ... 1995.
There's a lot of stuff you can do when not having your brain sucked out by the idiot box.
You can even rent hunting DVDs if you want to wach Trophy(uber-alles)Vision

Thanks, guys. Sounds like some conflicts in experience regarding service, but Direct seems to have the edge, both in service and reliability in this sampling. Pretty much agrees with the few other opinions I've been able to get from owners on my own.
Also, after I shot the angles a little more carefully, I think I may be able to access the right coordinates with Direct from one corner of the roof, simplifying installation. I'll try them first.
I wondered about getting the extra channels a la carte. One buddy I talked to about Direct a while back had mentioned that, but I couldn't find anything in their info indicating that it was possible. Seems like it's a feature they're not promoting. I'm leaning towards the package that has 250 channels and has all the stuff I want included, but I may have to do another comparison based on the a la carte channel availability.
OIS, I considered that option as well. Decided against it this time, but it isn't the first time the decision has had to be made, and it gets closer all the time. It's not so much that we'd put the time to any better use, though. Wifey's got her PC and a laptop, and I've got the old relic we started with. I told her this time, if it wasn't for football and Nascar.....and I'm thinkling about weaning myself off Nascar. With a better high-speed connection, we could probably both waste all our time just as easily on our 'puters. Wonder if anyone makes a 50" high-def plasma monitor?

I would definitely go with DirectTV. I had Dish for two years and absolutely hated it. As soon as my 18 months was up I canceled and all we have had since is about 4 basic channels. Dish could never get my bill right, I would lose service all the time, and the customer service was absolutely horrible.

Russ the bad thing about all those channels is 220 of them are infomercial channels. . Hi Billy May here and I'm going to yell at you....

Wonder if anyone makes a 50" high-def plasma monitor? Actually the 50" plasma TV's will hook right up to most modern PC's. ;D

I've had DirecTv for a number of years and like it, I don't know anyone who's had DishTv and liked it. Nearly everyone I know who's had Dish switched to either cable or DirecTv.

DirectTV all the way. We've had both. The only reason we held on to dish was because the Outdoor channel was extra on DirectTV. Now it isn't, so we switched and got 2 free DVR units. Their customer service is WAY better.
