Boy this great. I would of really thought he was Florida bound.
"Tony Dungy will remain the Colts' head coach through at least next season, Colts Owner and Chief Executive Officer Jim Irsay announced late Monday afternoon. Dungy spent the past week considering whether not to retire following his sixth season as the franchise's head coach."

With him and Peyton .... and hopefully a more healthy team, they should be in the running again next year.
I hope the Colts are able to keep Dungy for a long time ..... he is a perfect fit for this situation.

I am very glad to read that Tony D. is returning to Indianapolis for at least one more year. Now they need to draft another defensive end that could play either end and a big, fast line backer. This is my opinion anyway. A really decent back up running back would be okay too. As for Stewart, he is one heck of a racer. As a two time nascar champion. Wasn't he also a indy car champion and a midget car champion?

So he is, I was wrong on that one. Still, does anyone else think this will be the last year with all the talk of grooming a successor and getting him more involved in the decision making process? I agree they need someone to take some minutes at running back.

Awesome news! Here's hoping Tony finds coaching and being a "family man" a reasonable deal this year and in the years to come. Tony makes Indy proud!

I think this and the signing on Jim Caldwell is a negative. Tony's had two great groups in Tampa and Indy and has managed one Super Bowl between those. The year after Tony left Tampa, Gruden won a Super Bowl with TD's team. I've never thought of Tony as an "A" coach. He's an A+ human being but a "B" coach. As much as I (Colts fan) hate to admit it, Bill Belichick is just better.

I don't think it's a matter of which coach is better. Personally, I think they are both great coaches, both having essentially the same quality of players. There's two things separating them- the first difference lies in that the Pat's have been able to stay healthy all season. Get Freeney and Harrison off of the injured list for the entire season, and the Pats most likely wouldn't be undefeated and going to the Super Bowl. But they got hurt and the Colts are home. The other difference (and I DON'T agree with TD on this one) is that TD didn't play the starters all of the last couple of games. Bellicheck did and, again, you can see the difference. We can "what if" all day long though... ;D

That is such a lose lose situation for coaches. Rest your players and come out looking rusty and critics yell "bad decision". Play your players and someone gets hurt and critics yell "bad decision".
I think Dungy is a good fit in Indy ..... in other systems, with other egos .... I think he would struggle. Much like Bill Parcels did with my Cowboys. Bill is a football genius but coaching has just passed him by.

Both Dungy and Belichick are respected by their players, listen to the Patriots they mimic what Belichick says to a man, the cowboys did not respect Parcells. But then again look at their owner a definite wild card. He's fired good coaches and hired bad, turned around and fired the bad and hired good. Then you go out and buy expensive free agents that do not respect anyone or anything. Anarchy. As for playing players in games when it is possible to rest the starters. All you have to do is look at the attitude of each coach to wards opponents as far as respect for them goes. One does one apparently does not.

Freeney played in the regular season game against the Patriots and was a non-factor. They sacked Brady once and it was Mathis who sacked him. Read the IndyStar column from Bob Kravitz today. He is 100% on the money.

I guess it's hard to give up a 5 million dollar a year job when you are fully capable to do it.
Tony is a class act both in football and in the community, however I just wonder if all this "will I stay or will I go" stuff is staged each year.

It sounded to me like the issue for Tony was being that far away from his family instead of the money. When you make 5 million dollars a year and you're a halfway responsible individual, you can make that kind of money work for the rest of your life regardless of what you do.

Last Wed about noon i was sitting in the Indy airport waiting to board my plane. I was watching the people walk by and suddenly here comes Tony walking by himself. I wasn't sure it was him and someone sitting close by yelled "Hey Coach" and he turned, smiled, waved and walked on. I thought it was odd he was by himself. He went to where they were waiting to board a Tampa flight. h.h.
