Our annual church chili supper was tonight.
I thought I would throw together a quick pot of chili, so I went to the freezer for some burger…oops…all the burger is gone! I haven’t ground this year’s deer yet so I had to borrow a few pounds from my mother in law. I called, and asked, and she said yes, and I stopped and picked it up.
So with burger in hand I threw together some chili and we were off!
We got there a few minutes late but were able to get there in time to get the chili on the table before everyone else was there. So far seven pots of chili…When I set it down they asked if I wanted to “Have it judged?”…we’ll I figured “Why not?”…so I had to name it…I figured that in a public setting calling it venison probably wouldn’t go over real well so it got a rather cryptic name… “Special Meat, Sweet with a Kick”…well time to visit for a while…a little later I looked back at the table and say that there were 20 pots of chili…this is a bigger deal than I ever thought it was…
Well, people started eating and the judges started judging…as the night went by I watched my pot of chili disappear…it was the only empty pot on the table!
Then the judges went to the front to announce the results…first they announced the “Most Original”, then “The Hottest”, then the last prize “Best Overall Chili”…
Yup by now you’ve guessed it…I won! ;D
Best of all? Our church is in Indy, a bunch of really nice city folk voted my VENISON chili as the best chili in the show!

Nothing wrong with city folk--I was pretty much exclusively one, until I met Mbogo and increased my already present appreciation of the country--but a part of me will always love parts of the city. Actually, growing up in south-Texas surburbia, I was exposed to venison, now that I think about it... Congratulations on the chili win! Maybe we can get a pot at the next HI get-together??

My wife makes her "beef stew" in a covered roaster in the oven using venison in place of the beef. My DIL claimed to hate venison but went for seconds on the "beef stew" the first time we served it to her. When we told her what it actually was after the meal she wanted the recipe. ;D
