2007 Indiana Heritage Trust Report
-------------------------------------------------------------------
IHT hits Milestones
-- One million blue plates sold
-- Fifty Thousand acres of land conserved
The Indiana Heritage Trust sold its 1 millionth environmental license plate during 2007. Funds from environmental license plate sales have allowed the DNR to pass the 50,000-acre threshold in the purchase of select land in more than half of Indiana’s counties.
This natural land and water will be protected for this and future generations of both humans and wildlife. Hoosiers purchasing environmental license plates are the driving force behind the IHT.
Highlights this year include the Trine State Recreation Area. This scenic 200 acres in the northeast corner of Indiana’s natural lakes region contains a 22-acre, glacial, kettle-depression lake that is the largest and first of the Seven Sisters chain of lakes.
During 2007, IHT also acquired 24 beautiful acres along the Tippecanoe River for Tippecanoe River State Park, as well as a conservation easement on the 100-acre Boy Scout Island on Sylvan Lake in Noble County. The acquisition preserves the haunts of naturalist/author Gene Stratton-Porter.
IHT also conserved land between Adams Mill and Adams Mill Covered Bridge in Carroll County. Wildcat Creek, which runs through the parcel, is prime canoe territory designated as a scenic river.
Check out more new and unique 2007 IHT terrain with neat names like Suman Fen, Limberlost Swamp and Oak Savannah, along with outstanding IHT landscape photos, in the DNR's Outdoor Indiana magazine IHT Report:
