From another site. Good information..Shotgun explosion Guys I am posting this so it won’t happen to you!!! I went duck hunting with Zackattack and 69camaro Saturday morning. The ducks started dropping in and the action was hot. I drew down on some woodies and pulled the trigger. It clicked like the chamber was empty. MISSFIRE. In the heat of the moment I pulled the shell and dropped another one in without clearing the barrel. I snapped the barrel shut and pulled down on another duck and pulled the trigger. The gun blew up. The explosion took place under the fore stock. Even though it kept the shrapnel out of my hand, the force of the explosion broke my thumb and tore a 1.5" deep gash between my thumb and pointer finger. It simply ripped the flesh apart. It disintegrated one of the nerves in my thumb. After 4 hours of surgery, we still don’t know what the lasting effects will be. I only hope I can shoot my bow after this is all over. So please drill it into you and your hunting partners heads that you must clear the barrel after any miss fire.

This happens with pistols more than any other gun. A misfire or small pop sends the bullet or charge up into the barrel but not out and pugs the barrel. The next round blows the barrel up.
I had this happen to me several years ago shooting a .38 Special Colt revolver. A friend game me a box of old ammo and a couple friends and I were shooting targets. I pulled the trigger and got a slight "pop" and someone yelled " don't shoot". I opened the cylinder and there was a lead bullet lodged about half way up the barrel. I took a cleaning rod and pushed it out. A few round later it did the same thing so I took what was left of the ammo and threw it into the river. h.h.

Another reason why I wear saftey glasses even when hunting...you never know what will happen. Eyesight the most important thing to protect. I hope the guy's thumb is OK.

I saw that happen in a S&W .357 revolver. Guy fired a shot and it didn't sound quite right, fired another and it didn't either, I told him to hold fire, checked it out and there were two bullets lodged in the barrel. Amazing, but no damage to the weapon and no injuries, scared me.
I still shoot that gun. Those S&W revolvers are built like a tank.

It looks more like a 20 gauge was loaded than a misfire. In an O/U the shot would have dropped through leaving just the wad. We will never though.
