States Take Sides on D.C. Gun Ban Challenge
December 18, 2007 - 2:30pm
WASHINGTON -- When the U.S. Supreme Court takes up D.C.'s gun ban in March, it could open up a new battle between the states.
States across the country are lining up on both sides, filing friends of the court briefs for or against the District's law banning handguns.
D.C. has the toughest gun control law in the country. Virginia, along with Arkansas and Texas, are joining the challenge of the ban.
"This is a case of fundamental importance to the interpretation of the Constitution of the United States that is going to impact every state and every territory in the Union based on how they rule," Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell says.
Maryland, New York, Illinois and Hawaii are filing briefs backing the law.
If D.C. wins the case, the effects will ripple across the country, McDonnell says.
"My sense is that it would open the doors for much broader and much more vast restrictions that would be permissible on firearms," McDonnell says.
McDonnell predicts almost all of the states will take one side of the argument.

They can take all the sides they want... but once SCOTUS has decided on "Individual Right" the only thing they will be able to do is write laws that impact their own residents.
The Feds control Interstate Commerce so residents from other States will be able to drive through from friendly state to friendly state.

The Feds control Interstate Commerce so residents from other States will be able to drive through from friendly state to friendly state. So true for a short while until the federal government steps in and passes more laws. This is not a case gun owners can afford to lose. The stage is set as the Democrats now control both Houses and will probably win the Presidency as the economy is in the outhouse and there isn't much else going well across the country. We are also a member of the United Nations and their stance on individual gun ownership is well known and there is a treaty or two we have signed in the U.N. that specifically deny the individual right to bear arms. With that in mind I don't think this is a slam dunk case for gun owners. What a golden opportunity for the globalist mentality. The Democrats really want to improve our standing in the international community so you can bet if we lose this there will be more gun restrictions passed so fast your head will spin. You will be lucky to have anything bigger than a .22 left in your gun cabinet. Our individual right to bear arms probably has never been more threatened in our lifetime or even at anytime in history. I dunno about you but I would feel more comfortable putting the thing on a nationwide ballot rather than have 7 judges decide. While the SCOTUS is supposed to be apolitical we all know that the reality is. If we come out of this with our individual right to bear arms intact I will be really surprised.

As if it matters now that the NRA and the Congress are intent on Tattooing "undesireable" on people's forearms...
