KY Teen Killed in Hunting Accident www.wkyt.com/wymtnews/headlines/12551951.htmlFamily and friends say they are in shock after hearing one of their own, fourteen year old Ryan Hawkins accidentally shot himself during a hunting trip in Letcher County. Police say fourteen year old Ryan Hawkins accidentally shot himself while on a hunting trip. Family and friends say they are still in disbelief. “Ryan said dad I'm going to walk on down here where he killed his deer last year. At that point, I guess when they were loading up Anthony said he's seen like these vines and he got tangled up in and a log and he fell on the gun, it discharged,” Hawkins’ Uncle Carter Sluss said. Carter says Ryan died at the scene. Those who loved him say they don't know how they're going to celebrate Christmas without him. “He loved to work with kids. He was in the program big brothers and that's how they looked up to him,” Sluss said. Family and friends will gather Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. The public is welcome to pay their respects from five to nine. Ryan Hawkins' Funeral is set for Wednesday at 11 am at the Blaine Elementary School's gym. Hawkins was in eighth grade at the school.

Very Sad and tragic. Reminds me that several years ago, one of my Friend's Son was killed in a Deer Hunting Accident. The son was in his stand and pulling up his slug gun, loaded, but forgot to put the safety on. The shotgun bumped a branch, on the way up and discharged hitting the boy, killing him instantly. His Dad couldn't believe his son would ever carry or pull a loaded gun up a tree stand.

How tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Christmas is not going to be the joyous time that it should be this year and for many years to come.
I plan to share these stories with my Son tonight to remind him of the huge responsiiblity of having a gun.

Sad, but a Reminder.
Gun Handling, Gun Handling, Gun Handling.
Guns don't just "go off" when you fall on them.

Sad, but a Reminder. Gun Handling, Gun Handling, Gun Handling. Guns don't just "go off" when you fall on them. I agree. Very sad. How does a long gun you fall on even end up pointing at you, much less go off? A horrible and very avoidable tragedy.

It is sad that there are so many things a person will not truly "learn" until they are older.
I remember when I was a teenager going hunting. I was using a "baker" style climber and did not have a seat to sit on. I just stood. I was resting the butt of my gun on the stand and holding it by the barrel. As the butt slipped off the edge of the stand I peeked over and watched the gun falling to the ground .... landing butt first and pointed directly at my peeking head.
My guardian angel decided that was not my day to go and made sure that gun did not go off.
Unfortunately some are not so lucky to grow old enough to learn some of the most valuable lessons .... like ALWAYS treating a firearm with control and caution.

Sad, Sorry, Mad, Heart Broken: nothing makes this any better. I am going to kiss my kids tonight before I go to bed. I use to do this when they were little, but now that they are teens. Oh well they'll get over it. Enjoy the time that you have; you never know.
