I had to go shopping at the outlet mall today (ick...) and walked past a cluster (gaggle?) of 7-8y/o girls waiting outside for their Parental(s). Now this is a Saturday, so I'm looking pretty grungy. Beard, loose Flannel Shirt, Sandles in the Snow, you know... Me... But it's the practical week before Christmas... so the Malls are crowded. So I'm on "Ready Alert" - one step above the "normal crowd" alert, and two steps below "guns out". Anyway, after I walk past these girls they start giggling and talking- as viscious little girls do, ad I heard one say... "He walks like a Soldier..." I don't know whether to be offended/annoyed or exceedingly smug/proud. I think I've settled on Proud/Smug...after almost 8 years In before getting the Clintoon Boot in 1992, I think I earned it... ;D

Be proud/smug; even stupid little kids can see the soldier beneath the "grungy" getup.
Maybe we should legalize beating children for brief periods each year.

You mean you weren't going to be Santa that day?!?! I'd consider that a compliment! But there's no doubt the girl was inappropriate commenting on people so loudly that they can hear her in a crowded shopping mall. OI--you have a quick wit--you could have told her what she looked or seemed like in front of her peer group!!! ;D

I think that you should have turned around and said," Why thank you young lady. It was soldiers that died to allow you to say that".
It probably wasn't meant as a compliment, but that is the way it should be taken. Be proud..

When going to Crypto school at Ft.Monmouth several [?] years ago, a WAC told me that she could tell the difference between the Army guys [them] and the Marines [us] from quite a distance as we walked down the front steps of the building. As McNamara had everybody dressing the same at that time except for the hats [cover], I said there was no way. She said it was easy, the Army guys "walked" down the steps, you Marines "strut" down. HooRah!

It would be interesting to see just how many on this board served in which branch... US Navy 1980-84. Survivor of a WESPAC that included two stops in the Phillipines and a trusty, crusty Shellback as a result of multiple trips across the equator.
