To all my Democrat friends (and I do not want to know who you are):
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.
To all my Republican friends:
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Having many Democratic friends myself (one of which is my best friend of 10 years), I get a kick out of this! *"It's Called Christmas with a Capital C" plays*

Good one Woody. I make it a point to response with "Merry Christmas" when the anyone say happy holidays. If my Jewish friends wish me a Happy Hanuka I wouldn't be offended.

And I make it a point to respond with "Happy Holidays", in the same spirit.
Didn't realize it had become necessary to adopt the Christian faith to remain a Republican, though. Guess I missed the memo to that effect.
Doesn't surprise me too much, though, as I have watched the party drive away various other factions that used to vote Republican, until they are left barely electable by the slimmest of margins.
Too bad, too since they used to a "big tent" party where a great number of people could feel at home. Now they're turning into an American version of the Taliban and seem most intent on going home themselves.
Still my party of choice among the two leading ones, at least until they notify me officially that my votes are no longer appreciated.
Oh well, hope everyone here shares a happy holiday season, with their loved ones if possible.

Russ, my reply to someone responding like that would be to ask just what "Holidays" they were talking about.
We have freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion as many would like us to believe.

Actually, yesterday a dear Jewish friend of mine wished me Merry Christmas... I remember my college days in Boston U. (big Jewish population); we never had issues around Christmas or Hanuka times. Everyone joined in the dorm's Secret Santa or Hanuka Elf ( and we didn't divide among Christians and Jews) OK I did cheated to make sure I got the girl I wanted as my Secret Santa ;D

I don't believe you can have complete freedom OF religion without having freedom FROM religion as a part of the package.
"None of the above" should be a legitimate option. If it's not, then you are kidding yourselves about the extent of your freedom. Would a prisoner be completely free if he was given the choice of spending his incarceration at Michigan City or at Pendleton? Do you have complete freedom of choice in beer if it's between Falls City and LoneStar ?
I don't claim it should be the option of choice for everyone, although just like my religious friends I can't help but think it would be best if the rest of the world would just act and believe in the way that I think best. I'm realistic enough to know that won't happen anytime soon, and I see no need to have a fit about it.
I'd just like those of us who don't believe in the same ghosts as the majority to be able to share in the holiday mood with friends, family, neighbors and casual acquaintances without being accused of being Democrats 8^).
BTW, Mbogo, I suppose you've already heard about how the actual date of the birth of Jesus is still debated among scholars, and I think most suspect it was in October. Constantine moved the celebration to merge it with the winter solstice celebration of the pagans in a political move to unify the Roman population.
So if you're wishing someone happy holidays at this time of year, it includes the Rebirth of Mithra, the sun god, whose chariot will begin its ride across the sky a little sooner each morning and will ride a little higher and stay a little longer.
I would think that in the friendly spirit of the season, we would also include the holidays of Christmas, Hannuka, Kwanzaa, and my favorite, the celebration of approaching relief from constant holiday music everywhere we go.
Anyhow, you and yours have a great winter solstice or whatever, and unlike some, I extend that wish whether or not you prefer to celebrate the same thing I do in the same way.

If it wasn't for Christ there wouldn't be any Christmas this time of the year to share with family or the chance to call it a Holiday.
