I for one DO NOT like depredation permits..BUT HOWEVER..I'm also not a farmer with beans or corn being eaten and torn up by deer so if the man is doing what he does LEGALLY then we as hunters and sportsmen have no complaint with him at all..this should be taken up at the IDNR office and if you want the law changed then do something about it there and not by taking shots at a land owner that has a right to do what he's doing and hell yes I'm a buck hunter have been for 50 yrs. this year!!!!!!!!

I haven't heard anyone deny him his right to take bucks; we are responding to his attitude toward buster's well reasoned reply.

I'm curious to know how many prople hunt your property during the fall and how many deer they take?
There are lots of people looking for a place to hunt and it seems like your propery is over run and may need some extra help getting some deer off it.

How many "farmers" are on here complaining about what he said or what kind of deer he takes from his fields...probably not a one of you guys own enough land to plant in corn or beans or never have had to deal with deer eating your profits...so I'd think I'd just let it go and take it up with the IDNR and have the law changed...IF they'll do that as they seem to do whatever pleases them anyhow. Not a big fan of the IDNR if you can tell.......

Read it...... You cant keep the antlers from any deer taken on a depredation permit anyway. Hmmm..seems that somebody is wrong here...wonder who? as far as I know everybody keeps them so is it wrong the man for keeping a rack off a buck that was shot destroying his beans or corn or would it be the game warden for allowing them to be kept? ?

Over 10 years ago a big farmer told me he figured it cost him around 500.00 of crop damage to feed each deer on his property and he farmed over 1500 acres. There is no way it can cost that amount to "feed" the deer on today's terms... Even at $4/bushel on corn, that's 125 bushels per deer-- about 70% of what they (the farmer) *should* be harvesting per acre. Not to mention, how in the heck did he know how many deer were on his property? No one respects farmers more than I do- there are still members of my family that farm. However, I believe that there is WAY too much abuse of the depredation permits, and there has got to be a better way. IMHO, the only reason the dep permits still exist is because of the stink that would be raised by the farmers if they were taken away. With the amount of government subsidies that are out there, there really should be no need for depredation permits as "crop damage control" anyway.

I dont farm and don't care. The man that told me this had no reason to lie to me. Its not hard to tell how many deer you have eating your crops, just walk around and look. I will tell you this, I did see with my own eyes a 14 acre bean field that was totally eaten off to the ground, no beans at all. The farmer lost the whole field plus the cost of putting it in. Like I said earlier how many of you guys want to pony up a few thousand dollars of your paycheck to feed deer? You might have a whole different attitude if it was coming out of your pocket.
Very simply put what a farmer does on his property with-in the law is no business of mine any way. If you guys are so up set with the depo permits then take it up with the IDNR and get the law changed. h.h.

Back on topic...
I see nothing wrong with Buster's reply.
He did NOT say "don't shoot bucks" he said "Helphim out with the DPs then come back during the season and shoot does.
Honestly. Why do y'all think there are such high Bonus Numbers in some counties?
If you've got 3 DPs, shoot 3 deer. It makes more sense to shoot 3 does from a herd reduction standpint, but shoot 3 deer.
Heck, that's what I intend to do in Dunes State Park... and quite frankly, I hope it's 3 does. But I will shoot the first 3 deer I get a clean shot at.
dmd: No one, not me or Buster or anyone, is telling you NOT to shoot bucks. We DO think it is important, however, that you understand that there is a very real, practical, and sound management reason for shooting does when you need to reduce the local herd... which, despite your proteststion, is what depredation permits are all about. YOu can't stop the damage without reducing the herd. Period.

Exactly, there really isn't anything to debate on Buster's response. He NEVER said it is against the law to shoot a buck with the dep. tag....

I don't have a problem with the depredation permits but I do feel they should be a last resort. From my experience a landowner that is truly having a problem is more than willing to give access on his land to hunters. If it's a serious problem and it's costing you money, you do what it takes to remedy the situation. You either bring in more hunters or you bring in hunters that are more efficient. I think in alot of cases things could be resolved if the landowner changed the way they manage or regulate hunting on their property.

you're wrong too iron sights and frankly, i expected better from you. i will state this one final time then i am done here. the only reason depredation permits exist is to help prevent damage as it ocurs to actively growing crops. depredation permits do not exist as a herd management tool. buster's stated opinion was wrong when he discouraged someone from shooting antlered deer.

you're wrong too iron sights and frankly, i expected better from you. How do you know me well enogh to "think better of me"? I am not discouraging you from shooting bucks, only ENCOURAGING you to shoot does. That is exactly what Buster did. If all you have to shoot at is bucks, shoot at bucks. But if you hav a choice, shooting does makes the most sense because it means fewer deer eating your beans NEXT year. Why is that so hard to understand? HOW did he do that? Please parse his quote for me.

WOW!!!! Seems that I stirred the poop with this guy! Didn't mean to rub you the wrong way. Killing antlerless deer with a depredation tag is a 2 for 1 (or better) deal in the long run. Shoot all bucks as far as I'm concerned. It is your legal right to do so. But while sitting in the woods during the regular season, think back to all the bucks you shot during the depredation season and you will know why you aren't seing the number of antlered deer that you should be. Out of line.....hmmm. Having a hard time seeing between the lines here. I generally dont post my opinion answering questions on this or other sites, but it seems logical considering everyone's (including myself) addiction to antlers. I mean, come on here, which buck are you going to shoot when a 160's class 10 point follows a scrub-buck and a hot doe under your stand? My money's on the scrub buck to finish the breeding on this doe........... Thanks to all for having my back since my last visit. I can never please everyone but try to do the best I can.

Don't sweat it Buster. It's called refusing to read what is actually written. People see what they want to see. Some people want to be offended, so they make sure they are.
