How about a term created by someone with low-intelligence, who thrives on stirring crap up when they know nothing about what they are talking about?

I could be wrong here but I don't think I am.
I beleive a John Wayne picnic is a picnic held by old cowboy gun enthusist. There is a group out there that get togather and shoot these old guns and hold competitions. Alot of PCR guys do these type of things.

You might be correct Camby, but in THIS case, I think I am right..... I don't believe that it was meant to be a flattering label by the person who originally dubbed our Homecoming as a "John Wayne Picnic" over on another site.

Camby- that is not called JWP they are called Cowboy Action Shoots. You can shoot with out belonging to the Single Action Shooting Society. Yes they were started by guys that loved the old B-westerns of yesterday year. Semi period dress. Boots, levi's (jeans-non designer), chambray type shirts and of course cowboy style hats. Ladies dress is period style too. To be able to participate you must use single action pistols, 1892 or earlier rifles, double barrel shotguns (non ejector), and I think it is a 1896 pump shotgun. No more that two shells per shotgun. There is a great show on The Outdoor Channel called Cowboys about this group. I recommend it to all that might be a little interested.

I have little doubt that the term was meant to be an insult but I kind of find it amusing. I don't really see how anyone would think that associating us with John Wayne would be much of an insult. It would be more of an insult to JW than us I think. ;D

I gotta laugh at myself....i read that post over there and never made the connection. I thought he was talking about a real cowboy picnic, I somehow missed how it connected with HuntingIndiana's gathering....lol
