'Potential' candidate Thompson getting critical media coverage, notes MRC Chad Groening OneNewsNow.com June 6, 2007
A conservative media watchdog group says the mainstream media is beginning to give former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson the same kind of critical press coverage afforded Republican presidential candidates, even though he has yet to formally enter the race.
Rich Noyes, director of research at the Media Research Center (MRC), says of Thompson, "It looks like he's going to run -- he's sending all the right signals of someone who's running. It was interesting; he's beginning to get some of the more critical press coverage that people who run for president usually get.”
Noyes notes a tactic that can be expected: "George Stephanopoulos is on ABC suggesting that Democrats will go with the fact that he's had a relatively thin record." The MRC spokesman believes that even though Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and the other Democratic frontrunners have less time in the Senate than Thompson, they are still going to give him the sort of "raking over the coals" they normally give Republicans.
"Fred Thompson was in the Senate for eight years, Hillary Clinton basically six and half years, everybody else less than that -- Barack Obama just two years," he points out, adding, "I don't think you're going to see a Barack Obama or Al Gore-style treatment for this guy" by the media.
Noyes says that even though Thompson has not officially declared his intentions, his decision to quit his five-year role on NBC's Law & Order may be another sign.
"I think it's a signal, but I don't know if it's determinative," he offers. "If he signed up for another season then you'd know he probably wasn't going to run. But he's leaving the role and that frees him up. It doesn't necessarily mean he's going to run, but it's another indicator that he probably will."
Noyes believes that if Thompson does decide to enter the race, he will probably do so sometime around the Fourth of July.

And he's getting all of that coverage without spending a dime, now that's a smart candidate(to be).

Yes, really. By the time Fred Thompson announces, people will already be tired of the other republican candidates and their flaws will largely have been exposed while Fred will appear fresh. The media/libs must think he is a viable candidate since they are already going after him as much if not more so than any republican candidate.

mbogo, I totally agree with you on this situation. Looks to be a smart man. He's flying under the radar and it's making total sense.

One thing I read about Fred Thompson is that he has a serious medical problem. Have not heard him comment on his health condition. Would be very bad if about the time he was elected he up and died. So guess the powers that be better start thinking about a good running mate.

The info is out there.
