I finally decided to track down this Mel Gibson's line from the movie The Patriot. I had never hear it put that way before. Our's was always "Pick a spot". From the trivia section of the Internet Movie Database ( www.imdb.com ): "When teaching Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger how to shoot a muzzle-loading rifle, technical advisor Mark Baker gave them the advice to "aim small, miss small", meaning that if you aim at a man and miss, you miss the man, while if you aim at a button (for instance) and miss, you still hit the man. Gibson liked this bit advice so much he incorporated it into the movie, just prior to the ambush scene." Sort of like pick a tuff of hair on the deer...

yeah, I had heard its origin shortly after the movie came out.
There is no finer advice in marksmanship .....

easy to remember, clever, and just about as right as any advice ever...

Considering that Mel's character would most likely have been shooting a smoothbore musket the old maxim about "whites of their eyes" would have been more appropriate.

You would be surprised what you can do with a smoothie and TIGHT patched round ball... (for one or 2 shots anyway...)
Really, a .72 musket with a properly tight .690 ball & tight patch is just a BP fired 12ga "pumpkin ball".
Every bit as accurate.
The problem with accuracy came from undersized balls and little or no patching in combat - a necessity because of the fouling.

I shoot nothing but roundballs out of my cheapie .50 cal. CVA Hawken when muzzle loading for deer. It's deadly accurate, making one ragged hole out to 100 yds. off a rest.
