Thief swipes mastodon jawbone By BOB BRIDGE, bob@tmnews.com
WILLIAMS — Someone has stolen a mastodon jaw from White River Bait & Tackle.
Chris Amstutz said the thief or thieves gained entry though a window and made off with the jaw and some other relics on display.
“I don’t think they were professionals,” he said. “They dropped some stuff along the way. I’m guessing it was some kids.”
Amstutz discovered the jaw while diving for mussels with Randy Cornett in a remote area of the White River in August 1988.
“I saw two little rows of bumps running parallel with each other,” he recalled. “At first I thought it was some type of concrete block.”
Amstutz brushed sand away to inspect the find.
“There was no doubt in my mind it was a tooth, and it was bigger than any tooth I’d ever seen,” he said.
He used a screwdriver to loosen the gravel around the jaw.
“Randy got on one side of it and I got on the other,” he said. “We picked it up real easy and sat it on the side of the boat.”
Amstutz later took the artifact to Ron Richards, curator of paleobiology with the Indiana State Museum. He confirmed the find was a mastodon jaw.
Thousands viewed the jaw while it was on display in the bait shop.
Amstutz’s wife, Sherry, said they are offering a reward for anyone who assists in the return of the jaw and conviction of whoever took it.
Anyone with information about the jaw should contact the Lawrence County sheriff.

I've seen it at the shop, really cool. I can't stand scumbags either Woody and I hope they get it back.
BTW, the folks at White River B&T are super friendly. Its a great place to grab a pop and some bait before heading for Williams Dam. (and biscuits and gravy if they still do that)

Ditto that, Chico.
My brother and I really enjoyed seeing those artifacts at the shop, and the mastodon jawbone was the highlight of the display. It was a very unexpected treat to see something like that in a little local bait shop.
If they catch the thieves and display them caged in the shop, I'd drive back down to see that and maybe toss them a few peanuts.

Clifford's too moral for that [insert four-letter word here]!! Don't be dissin' on the big red dog!! If there's anything I despise, it's a thief as well....

My 3 year old just finished watching her morning episode of Clifford... Clifford would track down the crooks that took the artifacts, grab them by the nape of the neck, and pee-down their throats.......just like they deserve!!!!
Whether it's a bag of money from a bank, or a mastadon jaw bone...... a thief is one of the lowest life-forms. They'll nail these suckers eventually. You can't hide a fossil like that without SOMEONE knowing about it. Hopefully the morons will try to eBay it and get nailed in the exchange!!!

Just what does one do with a jawbone? They can't show it to many people or they will get caught. It's like those guys that broke into a zoo in California and stole a bald eagle. Ya really can't sell it out of your trench coat with all the gold watches. "Hey yo... Ya want to buy an eagle? " lol!!!
