Games, bird houses and Smokey Bear featured at fifth annual International Migratory Bird Day
Build birdhouses, mist-net for birds, play great games, meet Smokey Bear, and win prizes at the fifth annual International Migratory Bird Day, May 19.
The event, called "Habitats on the Hoosier," is sponsored by the Hoosier National Forest and takes place at Hardin Ridge Recreation Area.
"Opportunities from crafts and games to live raptor shows will be offered providing a great learning experience for everyone who attends," said Cindy Sandeno, wildlife biologist at the national forest. "Families will enjoy a great day outdoors while learning about the many species of birds that make Indiana their home."
Participants can create a variety of bird feeders, identify birds from a birding blind, and learn how to make their backyards more appealing to birds. Special guests include ornithologist John Castrale and naturalists extraordinaire, Cathy Meyer and Jeff Reigel. These speakers will present workshops throughout the day on topics such as bird identification and bird reintroductions throughout the state.
Children will be able to decorate banners and enter them into a competition. Winning banners will be displayed in downtown Mitchell.
"This competition gives us a chance to show off the work of our local children, while reminding people about the importance of birds," Sandeno said.
The day-long event, located south of Lake Monroe on State Road 446, begins with guided bird hikes at 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Workshops begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be held every hour. Activities booths will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free lunch will be provided, sponsored by Kroger and the Pepsi Corporation.
Smokey Bear will again kick off the famous bird-calling contest. The event concludes with prizes and awards at 4:30 p.m.
The event is free, but there is a $2.50 parking fee at Hardin Ridge. You must mention you are with IMBD to get this discount.
