Democrats are putting politics ahead of principle in order to guarantee that Senator Hillary Clinton becomes president in 2008, says best-selling author and retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Buzz Patterson. And, right now, Patterson says he thinks the strategy is working.
Patterson, who now serves as chief operating officer for the David Horowitz Freedom Center, is author of Reckless Disregard: How Liberal Democrats Undercut our Military, Endanger our Soldiers, and Jeopardize our Security (Regnery, 2005). He says the political wrangling over funding the war in Iraq is all part of the Democrats' scheme to undermine President Bush and assure a Hillary Clinton victory next year.
"If we elect Hillary Clinton -- unfortunately, she's probably our next commander in chief, which disgusts me to no end -- but, let me say this: if we do elect her, we will lose the war on terror," the author says. Also, he asserts, "We will have another replay of the Jimmy Carter administration, we will be an international embarrassment, and we will have to have somebody follow Hillary Clinton into office, like another Ronald Reagan."
The best hope for the Republican Party is Fred Thompson, who -- like Reagan -- has succeeded in the entertainment industry as well as in politics, Patterson asserts. "I think Fred Thompson may be the answer," he says, "and I hope to see and learn more about him in the future. My only hope is that he will be able to raise enough money to be viable. You can't get too far behind in terms of fundraising, or you're going to get buried very, very early."
Meanwhile, the Freedom Center official believes the Democrats are putting politics before principle in order to bring about a defeat in Iraq. "If the Democrats get their way and lose this war and regain the White House, which I believe they probably will if we do lose the war in Iraq, I think it's going to be a one-term [presidency] for Hillary Clinton, and I think it's going to damage the country tremendously," he says.
If the GOP does not stop Mrs. Clinton in 2008, Patterson believes she will be defeated in 2012. However, at that point, he says, "we're going to have to dig ourselves out of a huge hole that she and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will have created. And we'll have to have another resurgence, like we did under President Ronald Reagan. I would prefer that was not the case, but I think that's where we're headed."
Right now, Patterson says he believes former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson has the best chance of blocking Mrs. Clinton's 2008 White House bid, if he decides to run and secures the GOP nomination.
