Riot breaks out at Indiana prison
Every officer in New Castle dispatched to medium-security facility
The Associated Press
NEW CASTLE, Ind. - A “full-scale riot” broke out Tuesday at a medium-security men’s prison, according to the mayor, and pictures taken from television helicopters showed at least two fires burning in the courtyard.
Indiana Department of Corrections spokeswoman Java Ahmed confirmed there was a disturbance at the New Castle Correctional Facility, about 43 miles east of Indianapolis. She said more than one cell house was involved, and two staff members were injured.
The Department of Corrections sent emergency squads and county and state police to the prison. New Castle Mayor Tom Nipp said the entire city police force had also been activated. Helicopter pictures also showed police in riot gear standing outside the prison fence.
The medium-security facility is managed by the GEO Group Inc., based in Boca Raton, Fla., according to the Indiana Department of Corrections Web site.
The prison, built in 2002, can house about 2,200 inmates. It currently has about 1,000 from Indiana and 630 from Arizona.
In March, Arizona and Indiana reached an agreement on housing up to 1,260 Arizona inmates.
The prison housed an average daily population of 450 in 2005, according to the DOC web site. It also has a psychiatric facility that treats inmates who are bused in from other prisons.
GEO Group last year contracted with the Indiana Department of Correction to assume management of the prison

Funny how things like Riots happen... and one of these days one could actually result in a breakout.
I work within walking distance of the Electric Chair at the MAX facility in MC...
And people wonder why I keep my M4 at work....

If they're working, then they ain't collecting the welfare.
If they're working, then they're gonna be too busy to commit crimes or won't have a need to commit crimes, so we won't need to pay to house criminals.
Mitch is trying VERY hard to create jobs and has been reasonably successful, so I can't be too mad with our current situation, but I know there will always be those who expect something, okay, everything for nothing.

My fingers are twitching to type a comment but I will fight those urges. I know you know where I stand on your love affair with your boss. Back to the original subject, that sucks. I hope they convert the medium security to maximum security and punish all of them by taking what rights they had away. Isn't a medium security facility used for the less sever crimes resulting in a few more privlages? I don't have the slightest. I have no connections to any ex-cons or prison guards. Killing a few might have helped them prove the seriousness of it. I am sure the intention was there to kill a guard if given the chance.

It wouldn't have broken my heart if a few had been shot and putting them to work would be alright with me as well.

What's the deal? ?? I constantly hear about inmate overcrowding in Indiana, so why are we housing out of state criminals? M-O-N-E-Y, the state gets paid to house other state's garbage, nearly all jails and prisons do it. Several years ago Crawford Co., the poorest county in the state, built a brand new $4M jail with over half of the beds being intended for housing other county's prisoners for profit.
