Trail Cam Bandits Trail Leads Two Brothers To Jail
Two Northern Indiana brothers, appropriately named “The Trail Cam Bandits” were sentenced April 5th in Kosciusko Circuit Court. The brothers were sentenced to one and a half years in a Department of Corrections facility for the October 2005 theft of a deer hunter’s tree stand near Etna Green. Steven Briscoe 30, Goshen and Roger Briscoe 34, Nappanee were found guilty of theft, a class D Felony, by a six-person jury in March.
The arrest gained local attention after Glenn Ransbottom, of Etna Green, discovered his deer hunting tree stand had been stolen from his property. Ransbottom, an avid hunter, had a trail camera set up close to his stand to photograph any movement of deer in that area. Soon after having the camera’s film developed, Ransbottom held in his hand a photo showing two men carrying parts of his tree stand away from its location. At the encouragement of friends, Ransbottom contacted State Conservation Officer Lyle Enyeart of Kosciusko County and showed him the photo of what he believed to be evidence of a “smoking gun”.
Officer Enyeart and Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Investigator Sam Whitaker used the photo and theft in the weekly Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week. Tips provided by the public and additional help from the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force and Nappanee Police Dept led investigators to the Briscoe’s and their subsequent arrest and conviction. Each man could have faced up to three years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

Conservation Officer Bags One For Overbagging
A 19 year old Wabash County deer hunter was ordered to pay nearly $1800 after recently pleading guilty to 2 charges of unlawful taking of buck deer. Dwayne Jones, of Somerset, entered his guilty plea in Wabash County Superior Court after Conservation Officer Jerry Hoerdt, of North Manchester, received information implicating Jones and 2 others in a plan to overbag on antlered deer. Officer Hoerdt stated that Jones wanted a trophy buck but was unwilling to pass up the smaller bucks that ultimately led to him harvesting three times the annual bag limit for antlered deer. Jones resorted to conspiring with two other persons close to him to purchase licenses and who thereby unlawfully tagged the bucks as though they had killed them. In addition to his monetary fines and court costs, Jones was placed on probation for 1 year and given a 180 day suspended jail sentence.
